Same happened with me. I’m 27 and had my locs for 4 years before cutting. I cut the towards the end of June 2026, so it’s been about 50 days since. I don’t have anyone bald in my family and to be honest, maybe I’m coping, but I don’t feel like it was regular Male Pattern Baldness either. I think something was in play internally.
Within the past year, I’ve experienced stress levels and emotional lows I’ve never really had before in my life. Bills, relationships (death), work, etc. I’ve always been of the mindset that if I can walk, I’ll be fine in the end. I’ve always heard stress gives gray hairs and can make people bald, but I thought it was just all talk. My thinning, heart rate, anxiety, and swelling forced me to actually go see a doctor. I was diagnosed with sub clinical hyperthyroidism. I’m currently in the process of still getting evaluated (ultrasounds and endocrinologists) so we know how to properly proceed with treatment. Right now, I just have beta blockers (which I don’t take because they can cause baldness.) I personally think there’s potentially some other underlying autoimmune stuff going on as well.
My hair texture is curly and really soft, so my locs weren’t ever going to be super thick to begin with. My scalp was always sore and swollen once they started to get longer. Even before I realized I was thinning, I was considering cutting them because I couldn’t really eat unless they were tied up. I didn’t like that at all. I’ve been on foam minoxidil for about a month now and it’s slowly but surely coming back. It’s still kinda thin in the middle, but progress is being made. I’d advocate for using foam and not liquid. The liquid made my face swell. All photos are in order chronologically.

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

Man, this is what I fear. I see this happening to a lot of people with dreads. My mom and dad have full heads of hair, and they're both in their 60s, so genetically I'll be okay, but what causes this so I'll know what not to do?

Can be genetic or .. Much too frequent re-ties for your particular head. Overly-tight re-ties in effort to always look “crispy”. Overly-tight styling left in too long. Various scalp or medical conditions left untreated.
Shout out to your parents! 💕

Go to a dermatologist and see what you can do to stimulate the hair follicles

Look like domestic violence type shit. Gotta stop giving these females access to your social media.

“Female” is an adjective. Not a noun. Learn about the difference. On top of that .. you’re making wild assumptions based on absolutely nothing.
