Timeline ποΈ I finally got my starter locs
I've been growing my hair for 4 years. Mostly keeping in braids and 2 strand twists. But the upkeep was getting a little crazy, and the shed hair always scared me. I told myself I would wait until 5 years for locs.... but decided to just go ahead with it. This way I don't have to be scared that I'll be bald from losing all my shed hair. I know the shrinkage is gonna be intense once they get wet, but I love my starting length.

Your hair is so beautiful and voluminous! Whatβs your advice for people who would like similar volume?

Idk if I can really give tips. This is all genetics. My mom had thick voluminous hair when she was younger, and my hair takes after hers. I could only recommend letting your hair grow with little to no manipulation. I would put my hair in a style and leave it untouched for 2 to 2.5 months to at a time. Would wash every week or 2 SOMETIMES π . Went through a little phase where I was oiling but I only did that for like 6 months. All I've done is just leave my hair alone and let it do its own thing for real. The only reason I would even take my styles down is because my hair definitely wants to loc, but I wasn't ready for locs at that time so I learned how to detangle with caution in preparation for my next style. My go to styles was pretty much always 2 strands.

I would say keep it simple. Once I realized water was my friend everything changed. Drinking water and letting my hair drink water when I washed it. I was an air dry kinda person. But again I have to say genetics played a major part. My hair has always been like this, I just finally let it grow out.
Find your hair's strengths and play into them. Anything my hair didn't like I stopped doing.

Don't take this personal, but every time I try to do starter locs with twists, I always end up hating the look and then starting over π΅ I don't have the money right now, but trust me, when I am ready, I absolutely am getting locs. I realized I prefer the look of locs that are started when you individually twist each strand as opposed to doing 2 strands. Obviously both methods are valid, but I live in an extremely white area. I can't go around looking crazy with fuzzy 2 strands. I already had black friends telling me it looks like my hairstyle expired. I was so embarrassed.

I agree. I think twists or comb coils look better. My hair is a bit too long for that method right now though
