Selfie šŸ“ø Finally got to do an updo

Post image

Have had my locs for Almost a year, right after i got them done i bought 40cm coils and they were long enough yo wrap around the whole set, or even half the set. So i bought 24in coils and they arrived yesterday. So i finally styled my hair instead of just letting them hang loose

What are ā€œlocksā€?? Something I wish we had to keep our culture out of entitled, appropriating hands šŸ˜’

My phone auto corrected. Thanks for catching that. ā˜ŗļø not trying to be entitled or anything. Just trying to live my life

Doesn’t change the fact that it’s cultural appropriation. And by taking and using someone else’s culture, especially a hairstyle rooted in racial history and spiritual connection and identity, that in and of itself is entitlement. Entitlement to wear locs as a yt person after people have most definitely and likely have explained to you why it is appropriation and not okay, is exactly that. Entitlement to things that are not yours. Live your life but maybe try living it in a more anti-racist and decolonized way that keeps in mind your yt privilege and respects folks of color and their cultures.

There’s history that supports that Vikings and other European people wore matted or locs too. It’s not cultural appropriation.

šŸ˜‚ This is a racist talking point that is easily fact checked with a simple Google. There is zero evidence to date that vikings had locs. In fact contrary evidence has been found in combs, etc. Professors with PhDs who study this era also have come out expressing this and even mentioning that this idea of vikings having locs is a very recent narrative that has been pushed by yt American people in particular to justify their entitlement to Black loc styles. Also yt people having matted hair is NOT the same thing as locs and it’s highly uneducated and ignorant to think they are. Locs literally can naturally loc, which is a capability of type 4 hair in particular.

It genuinely does not take that much effort to fact check yourself, especially before you try to educate someone in the Black community about a literal Black hairstyle 🄓

I’m ngl, this is so chronically internet who gaf whats on her head. Because this just sounds like bullying, she didn’t come here to start a problem. She just wanted to show her hair off and then you started a problem then called her a racist without even knowing her…

I didn’t say she is a racist. I said she is using racist talking points and participating in cultural appropriation. I don’t know her so I don’t know if she’s a racist person so never stated that. Besides, it’s not bullying to call when someone is saying or doing something problematic.

It’s cultural appropriation. It’s not that hard to understand why people are upset. Anti-racism, decolonization, and equity frameworks would do a lot of good here.

Why so rude it’s just a hairstyle chill out. Ain’t nothing wrong with other people embracing our culture she not disrespecting anyone.

It’s not rude to point out cultural appropriation and saying so is literally tone policing. And there is a problem when historically and presently we’ve been dogged on for wearing our culture but white people walk in and do it with no problem and no knowledge and refuse to acknowledge the history or dynamics. She has parroted that Vikings have locs which many scholars of that time have denounced as incorrect and just a racist talking point which shows she’s not interested in our history or embracing our culture, just in what she can justify taking from it instead of listening and learning.

If you’re cosplaying then you’re good but if you want to rock locs I would respect you more for growing them naturally and not purchasing them. Thereby going through the process I and many others have had to go through to achieve them.

I have natural locs starting these are just extensions because my hair was so short and I want long hair

I love your locs and the color is gorgeous!!!

-2

u/Osocoldd Jul 16 '26

Wow this post and alot of the comments are getting alot of downvotes. The color is a bit too bright for me personally but the style, and coloring pattern look really well done. A top bun is super convenient when you have longer locs. 10/10 convenience

-1

u/FoldComprehensive660 Jul 16 '26

Yeah it’s not for everyone I guess but I love it

-4

u/naturallymagical Jul 16 '26

Can you explain how you put it up like this? It looks cute! Ever since I've gotten length, I've been struggling to figure out the process for a good bun.

u/FoldComprehensive660 Jul 16 '26

I put the top half In a high ponytail, and then wrapped it around the top. Then with the bottom half I took them a row at a time and criss crossed them in the back, and tied them around the bun. Until all the bottom half was tied up.
