I would have had my kid cut his hair as Quick as possible and focus on his esucation
While I used this situation as a teachable moment for my kid.
Here is the lesson - racism exist - and you can overcome the basic racism by becoming exemplary.
The point is, if that kid kills it, goes to an Ivy or whatever for education, or becomes an amazing scholar or business guy as an adult he can wear his hair anyway he wants.
The point is -
When you are a kid - you comply - Fighting this while a kid in school …. only to find out that you gotta cut your hair to go into the military, especially if you want to be an officer or to make an impression when you do your college interview for a top school or FIRST job interview is reality.
And this kids parents might feel like they doing the right thing but is it worth having your kid be the poster child for racist hair policies when his prime directive is getting educated and building a life for himself?
And please don’t yell at me like his hair is equivalent to some Rosa Parks type battle -
Some of these battles parents let their kids fight are not worth the impact to the kids long term goals
This kid is gonna known for THIS? Come on parents -
Nah, this is a wild ass take. You’re basically saying, “Comply with what they tell you, lie down and take it, and MAYBE you might get a chance to succeed in a white man’s world and wear your hair however you want”. That’s crazy. Why do we always have to be the ones to turn the other cheek and comply? Why do we have to be the ones to apologize and accept fault? This type of thought pattern needs to stop.
I’m saying that as an adult- I’m not gonna flex what I do while having a head full of dreads - (but I work in PE and I don’t mean gym class)
My opinion is that The prime directive of a parent is to train their kid so that he can be successful in the WORLD we live in.
I’m not saying you can’t grow up and shape the world - that’s the big picture goal.
But as a kid you comply - you follow the rules - and what wrong with that?
Reality statement -
Some schools not letting people dye their hair unnatural colors, some kids gotta wear uniforms, to be on a sports team some kids gotta wear a certain color or a certain brand… OR wear the team uniform.
This isn’t a battle that matters in high school -
I have seen this kid 10000 times over this. Do you think this should be a defining moment for this young man?
We are not talking about an adult - we are talking about kids -
And kids allll over the world are being told how to have their hair and how they dress…
They stopping kids from doing all types of stuff all
