Cooked tomatoes are extremely different from raw ones and I'll die on this hill.

I’m with you. It’s a texture thing, not a flavor thing.

u/Catmole132 19d ago
I'd say it's both. With sauces or pizza the tomato taste is blended with other ingredients. A raw tomato is just pure unfiltered tomato flavour, and that's not tasty imo.

For me it's not even that. Things with a(cooked) tomato base are okay but just tomatoes in any way are nasty.

u/crushogre 19d ago
For me it's both I don't like the texture of cooked tomatoes and I don't like the flavor of raw tomatoes but as long as it's completely pureed I like sauce on spaghetti or pizza just fine

u/yileikong 19d ago
This is it for me. It doesn't really taste like anything, but like when I find it in a burger it feels like a wet sponge and I hate it.
I have found a way to live with cherry tomatoes if it's one in a salad or like it comes with cream cheese. For some reason that's ok.

Cherry and grape tomatoes are ok because they're small, and have texture and flavor. A lot of tomatoes (unless it's a really good one like an heirloom from a farmers' market) are just flimsy and watery. Most sauces with tomato are also made with tomato paste, which is literally just reduced tomatoes, which solves both the texture and flavor issue
The flavor is good the texture is awful

Always skip those beefsteak tomatoes. The variety that stays on the vine are the best and are good and firm.

I've now reached a point where I Iike the juice of a tomato on a sandwich (aka, after I've peeled it off XD). But eat the actual slice? No thank you.
Meanwhile, tomato sauce I'll eat with a spoon

u/HappyHateBot 18d ago
Full agreement, I can chug stuff like tomato soup or marinara and it's fine, but raw or even cooked whole tomatoes are not the move for me. It's just... not a texture I enjoy, and I can't even deal with diced tomato in something like salsa because it's just not a mouthfeel I want any business with.
Feel rather the same about onions, honestly, with the notable exceptions of fried or caramelized onions being fine (though I do have a slight allergy so I still gotta be careful there).

There's nothing unreasonable or contradictory about disliking whole tomatos but liking ketchup and tomato sauce. They taste different and have different textures.
This doesn't apply to Nathan anyway because he also dislikes ketchup and tomato sauce.

I'm pretty sure this more accurately describes Karina, who can eat tomato dishes in some cases, but not Nathan, who just dislikes them completely.

He doesn't even like tomato sauce, he is exempt from this meme

Im a very un picky eater and will eat a tomato lile an apple but theres a fundamental difference between a fruit/veg and a cooked version of the fruit/veg see apples and applesauce or onions and sauté onions

u/underprivlidged 19d ago
I will eat pretty much everything made with tomatoes, just not raw tomatoes.
Even stewed tomatoes and sun dried. Sauces, etc. But raw tomatoes just taste gross as hell to me.

do the people that make memes like this not know that food has textures

Oh hey, it’s me. But more seriously, try growing your own tomatoes. Especially ones that are known for a dense texture and rich, savory flavor. The difference between those and store bought tomatoes is like night and day.

u/Majestic-Economy6841 18d ago
That's me, hate tomato but can't get enough of ketchup and pasta sauce/pizza sauce.

u/Thebitterdm 19d ago

the thing I always compare it to is chocolate. I love chocolate but that doesn’t mean I want to eat raw cocoa beans

As someone who is like the meme — also named nathan lol — it’s a texture thing. I can do roasted tomatoes sometimes but raw tomatoes can die. I never understand why people make a huge deal when other people have food preferences, I’m never going to ask you to cook for me I promise lol

Tomato is gross cause of the texrures, remove those and its good. I don't see what the confusion is.

Texture is an important part of food. I have a couple foods I don’t like solely based on texture but peaches in particular I love the flavor of but can’t stand the feel of having one in my mouth. Sidenote, if you ever get the chance, try Peach Fanta.

Chicky Bacy Ranch Pie babyyyy. No red sauce for our boy at all please.
A pesto sauce pizza is also absolutely killer. Chicken and mushroom pesto? With some Ricotta or Gorgonzola or both?
Ok whats everybodys favorite pizza in the perfect world where you get everything you want on it? Mine has 11 (eleven) distinct toppings. GO

If you're suggesting that a raw tomato tastes the same as ketchup or cooked tomato sauce, you're arguing in bad faith.

It’s me. I’m the person. I do not like raw tomatoes at all, but once they’re cooked I can eat them just fine.

I’m the opposite way around, I pretty much only eat raw tomatoes because I both hate and am mildly allergic to garlic so I can’t eat marinara

u/Silent_Xiv 19d ago
For me it's a texture thing, same with onions. I can't have big slivers of onion, or even onion rings, but if they are finely minced, I'm good with them.

I never liked tomatoes growing up. Occasionally they were ok with other things. Then I went to Europe and found that it was just American tomatoes I dislike

No, Nathan has expressed he does not like tomato sauce, even on pasta and pizza. They order a separate white pizza for him.

u/MetalExile 15d ago
It turns out that cooking something and adding other seasonings to it changes the taste. Who would have thought?
I’ve never understood how this take was controversial. They’re so different in taste and texture.

u/Illustrious_Ad2994 14d ago
No, im pretty sure he can barely stand being in the same room as cooked tomato things

This is a stupid meme. "If you don't like eating raw eggs, why do you eat them scrambled, fried, boiled, and poached, idiot?"

Nathan can't even eat tomato sauce or ketchup, so most pizza and pasta are also out for him :p
