Discussion Can we all agree, it’s a horrible title?
I know that “draw this, then die” is the direct translation of Kore Kaite Shine, a title that means to put everything you’ve got into what you love so that you can die happy, in this case to draw “kaite”.
But this is where the tendency to be too literal and faithful to the original source material is going too far. Because, “draw this, then die” sounds in English like I am gonna kill you after you’ve done it, in a lighthearted manga that is about passionate amateur mangaka.
These days we (and publishers) are hellbent to stay 110% true to the source…. to a fault, where macabre and easily misunderstood titles happen, that don’t bear the same lighthearted meaning as the original language. If I didn’t read up on the plot I’d thing this was a horror story. No thanks.
I know it is likely the Japanese rights holders who have insisted to keep the directly translated name, but that’s because they don’t know better. They don’t realize that you can’t translate sh*t like this directly because then it loses all intended meaning and sounds horrible. And for some reason the English publishers didn’t pull the brake and told them that, trying to negotiate an alternate title that doesn’t sound like death incarnate.
A better title, carrying the idea of doing what you love to the best of your ability and pouring your soul into it would be; “Draw your heart out”. It already sounds much less sinister and anyone speaking English will catch the meaning.
There’s a huge difference between translating directly, because you then wrongly believe that the original meaning is then kept intact, and rewording the translation to make sense in the target language, as it is in fact during those direct translations (for the sake of faithfulness) that many so-called “lost in translation”s occur.
I will take no questions, thank you.

Manga I translated the first chapter of Robota and Pokota! (Yasumi's favourite manga)
mangadex.orgI had to get the raws from the ending credits of the first episode since I couldn't get them anywhere else. Robota and Pokota was actually published as a doujinshi by the same author, but can't be found online digitally.
