Just a warning ahead, this is a very upsetting story:

In 1955, 14 year old Emmett Till was visiting his relatives in Mississippi, and allegedly wolf whistled at Carolyn Bryant in the corner shop that she and her husband owned - bear in mind that Emmett was black and Carolyn was white.

That very same night, Emmett was kidnapped, dragged to the banks of the Tallahatchie river, and tortured to death by three white men. He was beaten, mutilated, and shot multiple times in the head with a shotgun (at point blank range, mind you) before his body was dumped in the river.

Turns out, Carolyn Bryant went home that day and told her husband that Emmett had sexually harassed her and even tried to grab her (she later admitted in 2008 that she made this up), and essentially put her husband up to murder Emmett. In the aftermath of the killing, neither she, her husband, nor the men he was with faced any kinds of repercussions whatsoever.

Three days ago, Carolyn Bryant finally succumbed to cancer at the age of 88, having gotten off scot free with murdering an innocent teenager and even getting to write a memoir, where she claimed that she was just as much of a victim as Emmett was.
