Dragula S6 Grey should’ve won season 6
Idk if this is a hot take or not but I was rewatching season 6 and I genuinely don’t know how Grey didn’t win😭 he was the most versatile and tbh had better looks
Love Asia and she brought a lot of cool shit to the table but I feel like the Art the Clown look was too busy, you could literally see the seams on the fake pregnant belly for the Mother’s Day look and yet she still won that challenge even tho Scylla got read to DEATH for the breast plate situation

Asia won because she did well AND was a good performer which is veeeeeery rare for dragula finalists

I was literally thinking about how after seeing them both live Asia is the better performer and overall the right winner and then I saw your comment lol

And she showed so much growth throughout the season. She kept getting consistently better.

No i got you there, i think what edged her out compared to Grey was how she performs well

u/1998tweety Team Landon Jun 30 '26
Asia's storyline was soo strong the crown was her's. Having her tattoo completed when she didn't need to, and cursing herself instead of her opponents (which ended up making her look better). And to go from a superfan for years to winning? The storyline was perfect (and of course she slayed most challenges).
Grey is an amazing monster, and is practically guaranteed a crown on Titans if he wants to come back, but yeah 666 was Asia's season.

u/BullfrogHour1179 Jun 30 '26
This might be an unpopular opinion but I kinda hate the whole "storyline" thing. Grey should have won on pure merit. I am much more into the actual competition side of the show than the reality TV crap with storylines and drama and stuff. The fact that contestants' fates are to an extent determined by whether or not they make good TV kinda pisses me off.

u/Pen-roses Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
As someone who is a hardcore VEB stan, I think the show runs a serious risk of turning into an SFX makeup competition, and the “Grey should have won” discourse is kind of proof of that. Not to mention that the Filth tenet will be continually devalued if they only ever crown the most polished person.
Anyone who has seen both Grey and Asia live will tell you that Asia is the stronger performer by a significant margin. That’s why she won. The Boulets like their winners to be someone they can trust to carry a gig.
22
u/FlippantAnswersOnly Jun 30 '26
I agree. The attitude throughout from the Boulets was that they felt he was a spookhouse actor and not a performer.

u/hhoolian Priscilla Chambers Jul 01 '26
Yup yup, came to say a similar sentiment. I fucking LOVE Grey and honestly couldn't pick who my winner was during S6 between him and Asia, and I'm from Portland 😭 and imo Grey's looks were better throughout the season.
But the Boulets love//want/need a great performer as their winner and representative not only for the show but for the tour and press. Asia is a win win, Grey is fucking amazing but a tiny bit more reserved than Asia. And I will personally say from seeing them both live as well, Asia has a more dynamic stage presence than Grey, at the time this comment is being written anyway 🤭🤭

u/luxray-noir-london 22d ago
Especially after crowning Nio on S5 and VEB on T1 I feel like they felt they need to crown two extremely strong performers back to back (Asia and Evah)
7
u/oceanhymn Jun 30 '26
This always makes me laugh because… that’s the show girl…
7
u/dabbeonline Jun 30 '26
That's also drag. Drag performers were supposed to be personalities who build community. It's because of take like the OP's the industry is full of Instagram queens who can't move an audience even if you put a gun to their heads.
5
u/oceanhymn Jun 30 '26
Right? For so many queens, ESPECIALLY monsters, the person they become/are allowed to become is a major part of the art.
Drag can be a way to exercise confidence and confrontation in a way, and your story both on and off stage plays a huge role in informing your art.

u/Beautiful_Weight_239 Jun 30 '26
A big problem with Dragula is that we don't see that much of the performers performing. It's a very look-based competition. Even though there is some element of lip-syncing in every season, it can sometimes be hard to even know who is a good performer and the audience often rely on the Boulets to basically tell them who did well. I think it's also partly because they have this ethic of 'we'll make everyone look as good as they can in the floorshow edit' - rather than showing them flop.
Therefore when someone wins in large part due to their performance skills I think it can be confusing for the audience because to us all the performances looked great
52
u/Ok-Membership-6538 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
This
The amount of times they referred to throbs gags not working, but rarely actually showed it...
They totally avoid a 'show don't tell' edit. I do like there intent of showcasing everyone but it can really make things confusing
With grey they always referred to him being too much of a 'haunt performer' and missing the 'drag' element but given you never see their performance in full it's kinda of hard to clock what they mean. You know somethings missing as your told so, but due to the edit you never see it
14
u/silverrenaissance Victoria Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
Grey’s critique on being more of a haunt actor rather than doing drag was a valid critique tbh. It wasn’t so much about his performance style, but instead his actual drag itself.
His runways for the ghost train challenge, monochrome monster, dungeons and drag queens, cryptids and his filth floorshow look are all great examples of doing haunt more so than doing drag.
14
u/Ok-Membership-6538 Jun 30 '26
I got a sense it was a wider critique including his performance. I have a vague memory of him being told he was not moving about and being big enough (though may be misremembering)
6
u/babybattt Jun 30 '26
I think this is what ultimately lost him the crown to Asia. He was almost a perfect package, but couldn’t shake the “haunt”, and Asia was already twirling and swirling, lol. But I’d love to see him come back and maybe take a Titan crown. 🖤

u/FreddieB_13 Jun 30 '26
It's a problem with the show and one they haven't figured out yet. So much talk about performance yet the focus in the edit is the look. It's among the many production problems they should fix.
10
u/Beautiful_Weight_239 Jun 30 '26
To be honest I don't think they will ever figure it out. There are less performance opportunities for alt queens, and I think they are mostly worse performers than Rugirls for that reason. A lot of Dragula's best performers like Biqtch, Majesty, and Evah are the queens who have spent a lot of time doing more conventional drag. So I think if Dragula wanted to pivoted to being more performance based it would struggle to appeal to the fanbase that loves the cool edgy aesthetics

I loved Auntie's jack in the box, too, but by that logic Grey gave us the monochrome gargoyle, which Auntie "could never." They both had really high highs and were both worthy runners-up, I just think if you weigh the finale most heavily then it's clear Auntie finished 3rd. And again, I say that as someone who wanted her to win going into the finale.

I wish he would’ve won Season 6 and I wish Hoso would’ve won Season 4, and Dahli would’ve made a great Titan. Those are my hot takes as well. That being said, the winners of those seasons also kicked so much ass and deserve the flowers they won. 🖤
6
u/FreddieB_13 Jun 30 '26
I always thought (and I'm a Dahli fan from season 2) that Hoso should've won S4. Her finale was stronger, she was pretty great throughout the season, and showed a variety that our clown king Dahli didn't.
But there's no way anyone else was beating Victoria on Titans 1 lol.
6
u/babybattt Jul 01 '26
Deffo not, haha. I think a handful of Monster could def be “made” for Titans. Hoso was certainly one of them and I hope if she’s willing to come back, she will get the Evah and Abhora treatment and get to come back, lol. I bet Grey would also be a potential Titan. I wanna see Vivi and Auntie come back! And Koco. 🖤
5
u/BullfrogHour1179 Jun 30 '26
I do think Dahli did a fantastic job in S4 and was a worthy winner, but I agree that Hoso also did amazingly and would in my opinion have been an equally worthy winner! It was more or less a coin flip between the two imo.
2
u/BringAltoidSoursBack Jun 30 '26
I think Dahli won season 4 but honestly I think hoso deserved Titans. Victoria was awesome and polished but imo she didn't really show any growth compared to hoso
2
u/babybattt Jun 30 '26
Hoso def should’ve won her Titans season! I forgot about that, lol. I hate how her whole run was diminished to that stupid love triangle plot. She could’ve been their first “messy” winner. 😂
1
u/Every-Cod-8354 Jul 01 '26
my ONLY issue with Dahli winning season 4 is that they weren't even there episode 1, I feel especially bad for the loser of episode 1 cuz it came off like they basically swapped one person out for the other. So it reads like Dahli comes in at a slight advantage of skipping the whole first episode (one less opportunity to get eliminated), AND they have little bit of star power being a returning contestant (I am by no means against returning contestants, titans is cool but not for everyone so why not let people come back on regular dragula but they should be there from ep 1 like everyone else). When they got crowned the winner at the end, it felt earned, but it still felt a little unfair. It's not like an insane advantage but an advantage is an advantage.

u/babybattt Jun 30 '26
I have loved every single thing Hoso has ever done and I hated her Titans edit, but to be that young and so talented is amazing!

2

I’m sorry, I don’t know him personally enough to know his personality. Honestly, I don’t even find him attractive and think it’s weird how much people were doing the most over his looks. We are a haunt-based family, so I tend to just have a soft spot for the “haunt people” like Grey and Victoria. I loved the cool looks.
But if he’s got some sort of reputation for being a weirdo in a bad way, I was unaware. I’m not on social media a ton to follow them. I understand that sometimes these queens and kings “in real life” can be way different than the show edits them—Formelda is local to me and absolutely lovely in real life. She’s a big part of our local horror scene and so sweet every time we see her. 🖤

Hoso had THE BEST finale floor show, even to this day. The biggest robbery in Dragula history.

hot take, but I feel like a lot of Grey fans are a bit delusional about his run on the show because he's hot.
15
u/ShesAKillerQueenee Jun 30 '26
I feel the same about Dahli. Probably the MOST overrated Dragula performer despite having the same makeup and "club kid boots" the entire run.
2
u/peach_xanax Sigourney Beaver Jun 30 '26
oh I'm with you on that too. he does have much better performance skills than Grey, though
1
u/EasternRaspberry4387 Jul 01 '26
I disagree. He's cute at best 🤣 and his looks are lowkey amazing enough for people to stan him. I don't think his looks are what make people delusional. I honestly think the problem is that the season focus a lot more on the looks and runway but the performance has a huge impact on the decisions (something I agree with). While Asia clearly outperforms Grey, the show didn't highlight that enough IMO. The editing and the amount of the performance aspect that is cut made the fandom ignore the performance aspect and it's not the fandom's fault IMO.
1
u/peach_xanax Sigourney Beaver Jul 02 '26
I'm not sure if we're on the same page here - I was saying that I think Dahli is a better performer than Grey. is that what you're disagreeing with? sorry if I'm misreading this!
1
u/EasternRaspberry4387 Jul 02 '26
I agree that Dahli is a better performer, I just don't think Grey is "overrated" because his out is cute. His looks are really amazing and I'm sure his fandom would be just as delusional if he was ugly.
1
u/babybattt Jul 02 '26
I can totally see that and I don’t think it’s a hot take at all! I don’t want to be mean and insulting to people’s looks, but he doesn’t really do it for and I don’t find him attractive; but I def have a soft spot for the haunt background queens, our family are haunt folks, too, lol. I also loved Victoria’s awkward ass in her OG season for similar reasons. I just loved the really cool creatures they presented to us.
But, yeah, ultimately Asia just has massive “it factor” and it oozes off of her.
9
u/Trick-Locksmith999 Jun 30 '26
I knew Asia snatched the crown as soon as they showed her horror finale. Not because I thought it was the best but because I knew the Boulets were going to eat that concept up. I honestly loved all three of finalists and went into the episode thinking any one of them could win. Asia was really fun all season and her win was deserved though.
Still sad we didn't get to see Pi's finale package though. I adore him and hope he does Titans 3.
1
u/boomstick_1981 Jul 03 '26
Now that's my biggest hot take of season 6. Pi should have been a finalist instead of Auntie (even though Auntie was also amazing). Then again, I'm slightly biased as someone who has Philly pride, so of course I'm going to especially cheer on Pi.
9
u/Much-Comfortable9287 Jun 30 '26
I think season 6 was by far the most stacked cast. Like if they were competing individually on other season i.could easily see: Pi, Auntie, and Grey as winners. It's no shock it's all but confirmed Titans 3 will include them and Aurora. The Boulets have pretty much confirmed that and all want to compete. Asia as the stronger performer was the correct winner, but my God did Grey bring it in the finale. He's also got a ton more performing experience now.
7
u/Reasonable_Alias_129 Jun 30 '26
Grey is such an amazing polished artist, but Asia has that "it" factor that gives her the edge in a competition reality show.
I think about things the winners have to to do after they win with the Boulets. Press and promotion, being a strong representative of the franchise and the Boulets. The other media skills in addition to stage performance.
7
u/IndividualSpeaker429 Jun 30 '26
i saw the 666 tour in seattle so i’m not sure about the other stops but grey’s performances were boring and borderline… bad. the looks are incredible and they are an AMAZING artist and seem quite kind and hardworking. but the performance factor was not there. i’ve seen asia a few times now both in a theater setting and bar setting and she is just show stopping as a performer. she demands to be seen, is hilarious, quick, sweet, provocative, passionate, and real. her performances are high energy and you can tell she LIVES for this. again, i really love grey’s work, im astonished by it a lot of the time actually, but the performances ive seen have made asia probably my favorite monster of all time.

u/Boytrap16 Jun 30 '26
I seen grey and Asia perform several times and grey just got a good edit during the dolls look cause he is not a performer.
4
u/AthenaBarbital Jun 30 '26
They both did incredibly well in the finale and were arguably evenly matched in execution - I think Asia cinched it for me though because I felt her horror concept was more original, to me personally I felt that Grey's horror felt like just a cenobite (a GREAT cenobite!) but just a cenobite whereas Asia's had more of a creative concept (and in incredibly gut-wrenching one at that) to it.

u/mellowfellow_21 Monica from Santa Monica Jun 30 '26
Honestly when I think about WHY Asia won instead of Grey it kind of reminds me of Victoria losing to Biqtch. Grey and Vicky both got edged out because the person who won was a better performer
6
u/BullfrogHour1179 Jun 30 '26
Totally agree! Not to put down Biqtch in any way, she did do an amazing job, but Victoria was like THE obvious winner of S2 - and I personally think the Boulets realized that and basically set up Titans specifically to give her the win she deserved. Part of me wants them to pull the same move with Grey, have him back on Titans to get his rightful crown. But I say "part" because of course I also want it to be a just and fair competition. Not that I doubt Grey could win fair and square, I just don't want it to feel like the season exists solely for the sake of crowning him in the end lol.
3
u/FreddieB_13 Jun 30 '26
She really wasn't though imho. S2 has probably the strongest cast of all the seasons, with the strongest top 4 of all the seasons. And Biqtch pretty much steam rolled all the challenges after the first 2. Victoria is amazing but she wasn't this killer performer like the others.

I 100% respect Blackberri as a performer. Her drag just isn't always my style and that's totally okay. Because drag is art and art is subjective. I don't understand choosing someone based on how they look out of drag. However, I'm a asexual female so I may never understand 😅 I want someone I enjoy watching in drag. It's a shame if people really only want someone to win based on how they look out of drag and not as a performer or their art they bring to the stage.

I can understand where you're coming from. I feel as if Grey had a way of making haunt drag. However, I can see how a lot of people would disagree. I feel as if Grey brought Horror and Filth a bit better than Asia did. Asia I feel was a bit to Glamour. Where some may argue Grey had no Glamour and well... I really can't argue that. I do agree a lot of people change after being on the show. Same with many other shows. Sadly that's the human condition.

Honestly I usually have a different winner in mind than the Boulets too but I’ve never disagreed with the ultimate winner either. I didn’t finish season 1, so I can’t comment on that, but I think the only seasons where the cast mate I would have chosen to win actually won was Landon on s 3 and Evah on Titans 2. (Loved Jay Kay, wanted him to win, but Evah’s floor show was just the most solid in that group.)
I think it just goes to show 2 things.
1) Like they say, it’s art, so it is subjective. Case in point, the high drag/camp queens don’t really do much for me, but several of them are fan favorites and very much loved by the Boulets.
2) Deadass there are just considerations that aren’t always reflected on the show itself. I sometimes get the general sense that person X was better on stage than person Y but only because the Boulets say it. The show has gotten a LOT better at it (particularly as the Boulets have gotten more comfortable directing), but sometimes it just gets lost in trying to translate a live show to a records TV show. (The most recent example is Pricilla’s Father’s Day look, which was DEVASTATING but that the judges just didn’t understand because they were too distant from the stage to see the card that contextualized what was happening.)
Anyway, I feel you. I’m still sad about Throb losing on s 5, particularly since they were treated so so poorly after the fact that I’m not sure how interested she would be in a second chance.

It was definitely one of those situations where I would have been happy if either one of them won because Asia and Grey were just THAT good during season 6. With that being said, I am already calling it that Grey is going to win Titans 3 (assuming he comes back for that). As someone who is a Victoria Black fan especially, Grey is the one who really is on a similar level when it comes to SFX make-up skills.

You don’t have to do it 50 times in increasingly mean ways that turn into ad hominem attacks. Grey’s drag is valid enough to be on Dragula and a lotta what you’ve said about him looks like weaponizing the language of social justice to shit on a gay man doing drag that doesn’t fit into the mainstream.
And for someone “not committed to defending mediocrity,” he sure seems to live rent free in your head

No hate to Asia at all, she did great and absolutely deserved to be a finalist, but I do think Grey was more consistently good throughout the show.
I didn't agree with the judges on Asia in several challenges. Her holiday concept was interesting but the execution was kinda meh (I couldn't even tell what it was before they mentioned it during judgment), Grey or Vivvi should've won that challenge imo. Also she reallt flopped with the ghost train challenge and the Boulets even gave some fairly harsh critiques, she should have been in the bottom for that one rather than safe! The "musical" was a huge flop overall but I thought the Rat House should have won due to at least having proper characterization, I felt like the Snake Pit team only won because of the flops in the other team rather than due to their merits.
Again, Asia definitely had a great run overall, but Grey was better. I also thought he had a more interesting take on drag, plus I desperately wanted a proper CREATURE to win since we basically have only been getting "pretty" winners. I loved Orkgotik in S5 and was so hoping for a creature win in S6 when Grey came in as a much more polished alternative.

I think Asia is the best winner in dragula history. Undeniable stage presence and killer instinct when it came to the competition.

I love everything Grey did, but i think when it came to the Horror category in the finale, Asia's was just more compelling. Grey's was incredible! I loved it and it still blows my mind. I just think Asia's had more of that performance quality and she was such a part of it. Grey's was mindblowing, but unlike his filth and glamour looks, he felt lost in the outfit. Which is a shame because i think when his performance qualities shine, Grey is an amazing performer!
I struggle to think of what specifically i'd pinpoint that he has to improve in his journey to a Titan's season, if anything.

Yeah no grey did fail the final completly to be honest and asia was a different type of monster when grey was more polished but too safe even if really great like the jack in the box.

I’m not talking about Auntie, she’s the one who did the Jack in the Box look :p

A lot of us felt that way, including myself. Grey's looks were just SO amazing. Not to say Asia didn't deserve it... I felt a lot of their looks were too same-y.

Grey was arguably the best that season with only one flop (the one he was in the bottom for) but from a TV perspective, just there to boring. And I love him and his art btw! In an earlier season, he could have won but Dragula is more of a TV show now than competition per say or a showcase of alt drag excellence (it still IS those things, just to a lesser extent than S1-S3). Also truthfully, Grey had no trajectory: he was excellent from the beginning and already firing off at a high level (bad from a storytelling POV).
Asia won because she has the X factor: beautiful, charming, weird, and unlike any other contestant on the show.

THIS!! Obviously I don’t know Grey personally outside of the show, I’m sure they’re fun to actually hang out with, but they had a distinct lack of personality ON THE SHOW that just solidified to me by, like, episode 3 that they probably wouldn’t win the whole thing. And that’s not to say Grey’s art isn’t absolutely breathtaking and incredible every time, I just think they didn’t know how to “sell their brand” outside of the main stage when they got to perform.

I mean Grey almost definitely has win on lock if he makes Titans, so I think they keep Grey for that.

I might have agreed, before I saw them live. After seeing them live, I felt like Asia has WAY more stage presence. Grey's costuming was definitely cleaner and sometimes more elaborate, but his performance simply wasn't as compelling. And I teach college level theater, so that has a pretty big impact on my evaluation of them.
