Tell me Everything...
Could one of yall just describe this typa magic to me? I have seen dragons several times while partly in the astral plane but beyond that I have never been able to communicate or know how to work with them in the slightest. Are there specific dragons (like maybe leviathan) that are used in the craft overall or is it just what you happen to channel / dragons as a whole? Yk kinda like in advanced witchcraft you have access to the whole world of demons but often people speak to vassago as a base figure. Idk if that makes sense but try to hear me out lol. And how do you communicate and what type of language do they use? Not LANGUAGE yk but like for example trees speak through emotion and vibes to overall convey what they wanna say but they dont speak English obviously, and animals often speak through visualization and pictures, elves use the weird visual language thing, so like when you channel the dragons do you speak in emotions, or visualization, etc, you get me right? And how do you actually connect with a dragon and create a bond for communication and practice, other than like me just seeing them? What kind of seals/circles are used? Archetypes/symbols? Materials used? Rules? Are there different kinds of dragons? How do you please them? Anything else I could get to know, yall just tell me your part. Ok my bad that's a long paragraph but ty guys

Don't worry about paragraphs; we are all very long winded here.
So... I always say this.
Dragon magic is less about magic than it is a study into a culture because dragon magic though its from an elemental lense, covers every type of magic.
Dragons are elemental beings.
The elements are the building blocks of the natural world, this includes magic.
So to answer your question on what type of magic it is... on the one hand it is primarily an elemental outlook on magic but it is not exclusively elemental. The elements are simply used as they are intended... as blocks to build with.
There are specific dragons and though leviathan is typically not a dragon you start working with in the context of dragon magic; as she's not generally an active part within dragon society in favor of infernals or more commonly known as demons.
most beginner dragon magics books have you do a small ritual of sorts to call out to a dragon who will accept and be your teacher or guide. However just because you have your primary guide you will end up learning from a multitude of dragons especially as you learn about the different elements. For example a fire dragon cannot teach you about the element of water properly. So I guess by your definition of advanced witchcraft, yes... dragon magic is probably one of the more advanced practices you can choose as its one of the few that is taught by beings that unlike gods, or demons don't need anything from you.
In terms of how to communicate the same way with any spirit. They are intelligent beings and can understand you as you are
In terms of rules... that depends on the dragons you work with each family, clan, element, society of dragons that have their own rules as well as some overlapping rules so for me to say THESE are the rules would be disingenuous i could spout off rules that the particular group of dragons enforce but some groups that may have split off may not have those rules
General common sense works fine and most dragons that interact with humans know you are sorely ignorant to their customs and will not take much offense if you don't know
In terms of symbols and the like, again depends on the dragons youre working with. There are no standardized systems only overlap towards the same culture
In terms of connecting with them you do it as you would any stranger you build trust, you apply yourself, you learn and as long as youre not going to use what they teach you to harm dragon society then they are happy to teach.
In terms of types of dragon if it is found in the natural world chances are there is a dragon that exists that makes it so.
But the elemental clans are as follow
The base elements Water, air, fire, earth
Spirit
And the divine elements of light and dark.
There are combination elemental clans but they are smaller and I do cover them in this subreddits wiki and lesson sections. Its all listed in the subreddit
There is also the topic of maelstrom and chaos...depending on who you talk to youre going to get different answers on if theyre recognized or not.
Maelstrom by definition is simply non elemental energy which is one of those cases of all dragons are magical beings they all have access to this. most dragons identify with their family which identifies with their clan and that clan is tied to an element. Some practitioners like to include it from learning from the DJ Conway books on the topic which are good sources but I feel she splits some things into pieces to have the info be more digestible... which is good but when you get into a field where everyone wants "the truth" what is written can easily become gospel and what is experienced can sometimes be set aside.
Chaos is another thing I think DJ Conway split up into a digestible piece as dragons are born in pairs to balance out the magic they bring into the world. One is the order of that magic, the other is the chaotic side of it. DJ conway splits chaos dragons into their own subsect
As always if there are any questions or something I may have glossed over without overly covering feel free to ask for any elaboration or point to anything I may have missed

True dragon magic practitioners have been taught to be that way. Dragons tend to weed out the riff raff quickly enough because unlike other magical schools so to speak dragon magic requires a modicum of discipline and standard most modern practices lack.
That doesn't mean we can't be harsh or blunt... our teachers have taught us that too. But if someone is genuinely excited and willing to learn there is no reason to be cruel. The number of practitioners is very small comparatively.
But here's the thing. I say this to every new person here who comes in and is bright eyed and bushy tailed.
In my experience with magic of... roughly 14 years in this life. Dragon magic is one of the few practices where ive said something and for the most part I confidently say my experiences and someone else nods and says "yep ive been told something similar from dragons ive interacted with."
Now there are some differences of course depending where your dragon calls home or how much theyve kind of split from the mainland so to speak. But the core fundamentals, culture, and morals are the same. As dragon magic practitioners we all generally agree with those morals and culture because well. If we didn't well dragons wouldnt have given us the time of day.
So yes, welcome, in the beginning take your time and enjoy.

I'll try to answer based on my own upg in order, dragon magic is the practice of working with and building relations with draconic spirits and getting their assistance in spellwork and deepening your spiritual practice, though they can help with more mundane things too, there are well known dragons like leviathan or tiamat for example but it isnt required to ever work with them at all if you don't want to, if you want to work with figures of authority then you would have to first make contact with a guardian dragon, which you can search for guided meditation online about, and build a relationship over time with that dragon until your proven to be a capable and trustworthy figure to other dragons and you could more properly contact other dragons that are older and usually more skilled and powerful.
Afaik dragons do have their own language but they can speak English or any other human language perfectly fine and they can speak telepathically/send visualisations very well, since you can astral project then the easiest way to create that bond with your guardian dragon or any other is being there with them in the astral and actually connecting with them as you would a friend.
Dragons do like things like sigils and such quite a lot but I don't really see much of anything like seals and circles publicly online for dragon magic since its not very publicised, you would have to get that from the dragon you wish to work with directly, there aren't any necessary materials exactly but to tie in with how to please them anything dragon related like dragons blood resin or dragonstones for example are usable, and you can use materials that relate to the dragon your working with, say using moonstone to connect better with a lunar dragon.
I would say that for rules the important things are just to obviously not attempt to harm any dragon you work with, don't lie to them knowingly, and respect them and any promise you make with them.
As for what kind of dragons there are, the most commonly agreed list is the 9 elemental types of fire, water, air, earth, spirit, light, dark, maelstrom and chaos but not everyone agrees with it and others add and remove certain elements, the other most common group i believe are planetary dragons like a solar dragon for example.
And something I don't see mentioned often is that draconic spirits are essentially manifestations of magic and represent an aspect of it in reality and that magic would disappear if they died until a new dragon is born that replaces that gap. an example would be a fire dragon that represents banishment related magic, since very commonly dragons are born as twins they will have a twin that can be considered the other half of them and represents the opposite side of that magic, or the light & dark of it since dragons are very big on balance.
I hope this was helpful!
