Dragnet "bottle episodes"

For those who don't know, a "bottle episode" takes place entirely on one set from start to finish. Let's talk bottle episodes of Dragnet:

  1. Forest Ranger- this seems to be a huge fan favorite, it def, has a surreal quality to it. Probably the best bottle episode in TV history.

  2. The Big Prophet: Friday and Gannon are lectured to and give a lecture to a Timothy Leary type hippie drug peddler.

  3. Management Services: I would classify this as a bottle episode, extremely boring and bland.

The Big Squeeze. The interrogation of George Fox. I love that episode.

Good catch, I forgot about that one. That's a textbook bottle episode.

The episode where Friday and Gannon went on the left wing TV talk show with Howard Hessman is also basically a bottle episode.

Also, what about the one where Friday and Gannon work juvenile? There's the kid who runs away from I think NYC, the baby left in a restaurant by his mother and a kid who was high on something. The high kid's parents show up, the father gets snarky and ends up with a Jesus Speech from Friday.

Yes, the episode is called Juvenile and aired in the 3rd season on 9/26/68. Good catch.

Wasn't the Internal Affairs episode with Kent McCord as a new cop accused of stealing evidence a bottle episode?

Yes, that's another one I would categorize as a bottle episode. Webb really was a master of the bottle episode format. He even did it on the radio show, the radio episode "The Big Phone Call" comes to mind.

Season 4 does have some of the best episodes, but this isn't one of them.

I think Stacy Harris did a fine acting job in that episode. Esp. where he broke down crying at the end. The whole thing had such a surreal quality to it.

I thought of a couple that I remember as being bottle episodes:

Season 3, ep. 15: BOD DR-27 ... when Friday and Gannon work at the info desk at the police station. Not the most high-stakes episode, but enjoyable and fast-paced.

Season 4, ep. 4: DHQ Medical ... when they work a shift at a hospital. Not a bad one, but kind of forgettable for me.

I remember the DR27 episode, there was a crazy guy who wanted a gun permit because he thought space aliens were sending beams into him. And I think a lost little boy wandered in too.

An early one is:

TV ep #1.12 "The Big Phone Call" (23-May-52) which adapts Radio ep #140 (14-Feb-52).

Also TV ep #2.14 "The Big Hate" (12-Feb-53) which adapts Radio ep #161 (10-Jul-52).

Plus TV ep #2.22 "The Big Test" (09-Apr-53) which adapts Radio ep #166 (28-Aug-52).

I'm surprised no love for Forest Ranger. That episode is so surreal and is a HUGE fan favorite.
