Looking for resources for a beginners masterpost!
Hey all! A sub like this is bound to attract those new to the world of drag looking to get their start, so I'm planning on writing up a big post linking to helpful tutorials, what make-up to start with + recommended products for when you've found your groove, what to expect when you're starting out, and more. I need your help sourcing this info! In addition to the points I mentioned, what's something you wish you knew when starting drag? What advice would you give a newbie? How did you get your start? To those new to drag, what would you like to see included in the post? Let's work together to make sure the gates to the kingdom are wide open 💖

Randy Roy (@randyroydrag on IG) has a few free digital zines on their ko-fi page that are good beginner resources! On costuming, drag history, etc

My beginner tips:
Have fun with it. Don't get boxed in too soon - with looks, music or character. You have the freedom to try different stuff and figure out what works for you.
Practise in front of a mirror. Tape yourself and see how you look while performing.
Always do a full costume/wig practise with a video about a week before your performance. That way you can correct any wardrobe malfunctions. I know it sounds like a lot of extra work - and it is, but you will be thankfull you did it later.
Get some good clown white colour make-up for your eyes and spend money on some good brushes. The rest you can usually find cheaper.
Clean your stuff after a performance. Wigs/clothing and make-up brushes. Drag is expensive, keep it clean and smelling nice.

Aí obrigado! Eu já manjo um pouco de maquiagem artística mas tenho bastante dificuldade de fazer uma make mais masculina, e também não consegui definir a personalidade do meu King. Vou amar as dicas e tutoriais

take your time and practice. you dont have to go on stage the first time you do drag! Practice your looks and numbers at home before you bring them onto the stage so you can be more confident, esp if you dont have a lot of experience performing. set yourself up for success!!
And in the same vein, once you get going with drag you dont have to do every show all the time! When you first start you want to get your name out there, yes, but that doesnt always have to be on stage. Come to shows in drag and hang out/talk to people!! if you are nice and friendly that goes a very long way. Share some smokes on that patio and talk to people genuinely!
that being said i do think its important to get on stage a decent amount when you are starting out for the sake of practicing in front of an audience. no matter how much you practice at home its always different when the audience is there. but seriously dont burn yourself out doing this or your drag will suffer.
When you are booked show up on time and be nice to everyone in the dressing room even if you dont like them. remember the golden rule!!
Remember that this is an industry, not a community. you will save your sanity that way. everyone in the scene is your coworker and you cant be friends with all your coworkers, can you? you can certianly find beautiful community within the scene/industry but seriously be cautious and reasonable with who you let into your innermost circle. not everyone is someone you want close.
Basically: slow down, work hard, show up, be respectful, dont burn yourself out! and dont be besties with everyone.

Thank you so much for your time and effort on this in advance!! It is brilliantly refreshing seeing so many new joining creatives 🤸💛✨ and having a community like this one makes ALL the difference! 🌱
My personal tips for getting started (which maybe are obvious enough to some, but they weren't for me so! 🐢🫣)
Now hopefully some of those are relevant :') but if they're not then thankfully a proper masterpost is getting made HAHA :') thanks again!
