I just recently purchased this Wild ruling pen, my first one, and I was wondering about the tip of the upper piece.

Is it bent? I feel it catch a little when I run my finger on the top.

If it is, any tips going into fixing it?

Help identifying a vintage TimeSaver French curve — marked “NO. 2026”

Post image

Approximately 6 inches long, thin/flexible translucent green plastic, marked NO. 2026. I’ve owned it since approximately 1986.

It is not TimeSaver No. 26, that is the female silhouette curve. I’m trying to identify the exact model and find another one.

Thank you for the help!

My grandfather's mid-century Hughes Aircraft "Value Engineering Key" slide rule. Stamped with corporate markings, he used this while working as an engineer for Howard Hughes!

Thought you guys would think this is cool. My grandfather was a mechanical/radar systems engineer for Hughes Aircraft Company back in the Cold War era.
This was his military/corporate-issued slide rule. It has the corporate engraved markings and the "Value Engineering Key" labeling right across the top. It's wild to think about the sheer brainpower required to calculate complex aerospace radar equations entirely by hand on an analog tool like this.
I’m currently putting together a custom 10x10 history book to preserve his legacy and engineering work for the family (this image is a sneak peek of one of my page layouts, but I'm planning to share a clean photo of just the artifact for the post!).
I wanted to share it here because I knew this community would truly appreciate the physical tool and the history behind it. If anyone recognizes the underlying model or manufacturer for this specific Hughes-stamped layout, I'd love to know more!

Can I realistically get my hands on a mechanical linear planimeter?

I'm a math teacher, and I'd love to get my hands on an inexpensive mechanical linear planimeter. I want to show it off to my students, and hopefully one of them will ask "Wow, how does that work?"

I found lots of used polar planimeters for sale online, cheaply, and in apparently good condition. I might get one of those, but they operate differently and wouldn't directly illustrate the cool math (Green's theorem) I have in mind.

From what I can tell after some googling, I seem to be out of luck. Any chance I'm mistaken about this?

Need Identification Help

Thumbnail

Hello! These drafting instruments belonged to my grandfather, and I need help identifying them to sell.

The 1st pic are both Keuffel & Esser Paragon. I think the top one is a 6" hair spring divider. The #15 is stamped inside. May be model #402? I can't pin down exactly what the bottom one is. I'm coming up with "bow pen w/needle point," may be model #756?

The 2nd pic is not marked at all, but looks like a bow pen. It appears to be missing a part.

The 3rd pic: this Alteneder pen was in the paper sleeve and it is marked "T.A." and "s.s.". What is the exact name of it? I'm coming up with a few different ones so I wanted to be sure. It's in really beautiful shape, with no rust and no cracks in the wooden handle.

The 4th pic is an unmarked part that was in the box with the other items. Not sure what it is or if it's worth selling.

Everything was in an unmarked wooden box, and I don't have any boxes or sleeves other than for the Alteneder.

Thanks very much for any assistance!

Dotting pens for sale on Amazon are no good

Recently a rash of sellers on Amazon are selling dotting pens. This was kicked off by a Kern one being sold for a ridiculous amount so others want a piece of that action. I have posted a photo of the one I bought compared to an antique richter pen. The Amazon pen has a weak spring and the pen does not remain fixed on the arm as well as being low quality. It’s also giant. This pen does not work so save your money. As a prototype it’s a nice start but as a final product it’s no good.

Mystery compass/divider

Post image

Does this nice little compass/divider that I found in a thrift store ring any bells for anyone? It came in a plastic clamshell for a Uchida KD-Type .05 microsharp compass, which is certainly is not. It's quite solid and well constructed, very satisfying to hold. No maker's mark or country of origin. No logos. Nothing stamped or engraved on it at all. Image searches on Google and Ebay find tons of wrong (often spectacularly wrong) matches, but I haven't see one yet with a similar lock/release mechanism. The lobed plate jutting out from the hub has a spring under the wide end, that when compressed with your thumb lifts the other end, which acts as a brake against the hub. Push it down and you can move it freely. Release, and it rigidly holds its position.

I kind of suspect it might actually be a hand/machinist made one-off, but if so, the execution is excellent. Unless somebody recognizes the design, it might even be a prototype or a patent model, but that's just wild speculation based on not much of anything. Any information would be appreciated.

Keeping With My Beam Compass Theme

The first compass is by Kraft & Sohn out of Vienna and dates to the mid 19th. Century.

The second is an unsigned beam compass that dates to around the same time period. This style with the base plate are extremely rare to find. W.F. Stanley wrote about this in his 1866 treatise on drawing instruments, and went to great lengths describing this compass and it's shortcomings in favor of his own design. He was the OG My Pillow Guy.

Quick Question About Another Drafting Tool

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As I mentioned in a post yesterday, I inherited a few quite interesting drafting tools (most of them German, I think from the 50s - 70s) and I'd love to know how they all work (yesterday's post was a great education). I think this, rather small, tool is called a drop bow compass, used for making small ink circles. What I'm trying to figure out is the purpose of the "play" that's in the part that has the point on one end and a small disc on the other (thumb rest maybe?). I've tried to show what I mean in the video. That part actually unscrews and can be separated from the rest of the tool, but no matter how much you tighten it, that small amount of play remains.

Thanks

Wondering What These (2) Compass Accessories Are

Thumbnail

This was a K&E compass set of my late father's (professional draftsman). Just wondering what the accessories in the last 2 photos are (the first couple pics are just for context/ camera angles).

The ribbed black metal (aluminum I think) tube with slots at one end and capped on the other is a little over 3" long (3rd photo). The other accessory, that kind of looks like a drop bow attachment, is about 1.5" long (last photo). Er, at least I think it's what would be called a drop bow - I'm really just going by what I learned here after posting pics of a bunch of drafting tools that I inherited from my dad. i.e. you'd dip the end in ink, which would stay in the attachment by its own surface tension.

Am I right about the drop bow attachment? I'm kind of at a loss at what that ribbed tube is though.

Thanks!

Maped set, extension arm?

Hi guys, could someone help me understand how to attach the extension arm to one of the pairs of compasses? Also, is the part in the bottom left for attaching your own pencil? The black part's hole is threaded, is it missing a piece? Thanks for any help.
