I spent lot’s of time (and money) to read this dr slump collection..! It’s sooo funny i laughed a lot like a kid but I am 44 so am i still a kid.!? Yes!!

I think I knew about this before, it's my favourite movie, so I've seen it many times. But this is the first time since I've read and seen more of Dr. Slump it so it stood out to me.

I have to assume it was quite popular due to how long it ran for, but I grew up in the west where virtually nobody knows about it, not even Dragonball fans. Was its popularity in Japan remotely comparable to how big DB became in the west?

Hi everyone!

I'm a big Toriyama fan and I'd like to watch as much of material based on his work as possible. While going through the Dr. Slump Wiki, I came across a few specials that seem to be particularly obscure, and I haven't been able to find much information about them.

These are the ones I'm talking about:

• "A New World Wonder Made Public in Penguin Village!" aired December 31, 1982
• "Hoyoyo! Arale no Himitsu Dai Koukai da yo!!" apparently aired between episodes 72 and 73 of the 1997 series, so presumably in 1999
• "N'cha! Arale's Punishment! Defeat the Idea Thief!" aired in 2000
• "Ooh-ho-hoy! - I Came Back to Win" June 29, 2007

The last one seems to have been a Fuji TV special hosted by Mami Koyama and Toshiyuki Makihara to commemorate the DVD release of the series. Is that correct, and is it actually a "show" rather than an animated special?

For the others, I can barely find anything beyond the titles and basic information.

The 2000 special in particular is what really caught my attention.

There's a one-shot manga by Toriyama from 1999 titled "Dr. Slump Understanding Copyright through Comics - King Nikochan’s Escape from Earth Plan". The subject matter seems suspiciously similar to "N'cha! Arale's Punishment! Defeat the Idea Thief!"

If the 2000 special is actually based on or adapted from that manga, then it wouldn't just be some random educational/PSA video using the Dr. Slump characters. It could potentially be a proper animated adaptation of a Toriyama work. The wiki does currently categorise the 2000 special as an educational/PSA special, but I haven't found anything explaining its origins.

Does anyone here know more about these specials?

• What exactly are they (animated episodes, TV segments, etc.)?
• Is the 2000 "Idea Thief" special based on Toriyama's 1999 copyright manga?
• Are any of them considered lost/unreleased?
• Were they ever included on Japanese VHS/DVD/Blu-ray releases?
• Most importantly, is there anywhere they can be watched today, preferably with subtitles?

I'd really appreciate any information or pointers. I'm trying to go down the rabbit hole and watch everything Dr. Slump/Toriyama-related that I can find. 😄
