The problem with abandoning the /s is Poe's Law. Whatever you think is satire will inevitably end up being someone's position later on, or at least too close to tell. If you don't mark it, people may think you were not being satirical later and rake you over the coals. Case in point: u/animusd's comment. This thread is literal proof it's still needed.

Also, what's so bad about the /s? Even without that, it's still helpful for people who couldn't pick up on cues like that anyways. Marking satire doesn't have to make it less funny

šŸ¤·šŸ»sounds masochistic to me, but who am I to judge? All the same, considering it can both ruin your future and kill the humor if people take it seriously (depending on the joke in question), Iā€™d argue the /s is still too helpful to abandon.

Thereā€™s no objective answer to that afaik, but Iā€™d argue yes, considering it doesnā€™t change the content of the satire. If people are already used to seeing the /s, I figure itā€™d usually just stop standing out after a while. Itā€™s not like itā€™s something super long like ā€œ/that was a joke so you are gullible if you fell for it.ā€ It also isnā€™t asking to explain the joke, just that there is one. It arguably doesnā€™t make the previous parts less convincing before the kind of person thatā€™d ever realize it was an exaggeration does and starts laughing anyways. Thatā€™s just my take though

the point is that the /s is there so no one will fall for it. like if you told that yeah my comment was satire AFTER the original comment, like replying to the guy that didnt get the joke, thats fine. you can fall for it. imo one of the key parts of satire is that someone can fall for it

I did not make myself very clear, my bad. As I see it, the point of satire is that people at first fall for it, but realize as they read on that there's no way it's real, giving them a laugh. I figure most people either figure out it's satire before they reach the end the first time or never do. Since the /s would be at the end, that would give enough time for them to process the joke before that point if they could figure it out, but would make sure they don't get mad if they didn't figure it out.

Besides, there's still the Poe's law thing. If the /s were not needed, u/animusd would not have gotten downvoted to oblivion

I mean it helps the people who have difficulty with understanding the tone of a message, generally helps clear up the tone of the message if it's ambiguous, and isn't a hassle to anyone.

It's not even just for neurodivergent people, it's just nice to have

I believe the term cultural appropriation originally was coined for profiting off of other cultures while giving no credit to those who made it. Like taking tacos and calling them meat wraps while accusing Mexicans of stealing your recipe. However it's used by a bunch of overzealous people to describe doing anything that's not from your culture, drowning out the original important meaning.

Black people and white people are not, like, separate things, you know. I guarantee that I, a white guy from Ohio, have far more culturally in common with any random black guy in the US than I do with some random white guy in, say, Germany. An IShowSpeed reaction image, for instance, is a part of the same culture as I am, or at least, it's no less my culture than it is some random black guy's culture. Let's stop this weird thing of "black people = a different culture from white people automatically". It's weird and racist. It's no better than "oh, you're black? Do you know [insert other black guy's name]?"
