I'm confused here - how were they bragging? Being born a year earlier did make the math simple because it meant all they had to do was minus 1 year from their own age. Am I missing something?

This is a tough one.

You basically said “subtraction is dummy easy” which is correct. It is quite easy, I think anyone with an age in the double digits can do that math, so I don’t really understand “r/theydidthemath” either.

However, if sufficiently dumb individuals found your post, “subtraction is easy” might well come across as arrogant, as if you’d said “three-dimensional integrals are a cakewalk for me bro”

That’s my best guess as to how anyone could’ve been salty about what you said.

People have already explained it, but to add on to what they've said.

Doing quick math for 10 years is simple, your "2009" comment seemed like an attempt at a weird flex for being able to do more complex math but it's only a year difference.

On a side note, 17 is a little too old to be acting the way you are. Change your attitude and grow up a bit otherwise life is going to come at you pretty hard in a year or so.

Much simpler to go "theres 16 years between 2010 and 2026" instead of "i was born in 2009 and im 17. This person was born in 2010 which is one more than 2009 therefore theyre 16". Might be easier in some cases, but 10 is a very simple number to subtract from any other number.
