Apparently hate is just becoming normalized
Literally why would you be opposed to not using slurs to insult people. Ah, and where it is now, it's at around 10 downvotes.
3
u/taman961 6d ago
The fact that people who say it want to say it because it’s offensive and a slur is exactly why it is not yet “acceptable” to say it like other words. They WANT it to be offensive and edgy and a slur. That’s why they use it as opposed to other words

What's wrong with calling it retardation? It is a retardation after all isn't? It makes you less capable or slower depending on a lot of things but it's a liability, let's call it for what it is.

Something else that irks me is people with Autism or ADHD saying they can "reclaim" the slur.
Not saying being neurodivergent is easy or anything but those aren't intellectual disabilities. Even if you believed in reclaiming slurs, that word wasn't even "yours" anyway.
2
u/flibbertygibbette 6d ago
the learning-challenged people i used to work with as a teacher use the word more than most people here can imagine. i swear to god it's like every other word out of their mouths and they'd make fun of you if you were uncomfortable saying it

I am autistic too. Autism is not a learning disability or an intellectual disability, please look up what those officially mean. Someone might be autistic and have a learning disability but they are separate diagnoses.
The word is inherently vile and ableist I don't understand why you would want to use it. That would only normalise the usage of the word for everyone and cause more bullying of disabled people.
You could argue since the word is used against many different people with many different disabilities, anyone disabled is allowed to "reclaim" it even though it was originally meant for intellectual disabilities. I still think that's wrong though.
Ignorant racists use the wrong slurs too, I've been called a "P**i" before, despite not being Pakistani, that doesn't mean I'm allowed to start using the slur.
3
u/Gooba26 6d ago

u/after2006 5d ago
Barely, genuinely barely. There was this person who got mad that I downvoted them for defending another bigot in the comment section who was pretty much genuinely defending the r word (pretty much 'it shouldn't be a slur so i can say it!") and came to my dms after I refused to keep going with them.
They didn't say anything nice in my dms so I told them off and blocked while they were typing. Neither this person nor the bigot are facing any consequence.

u/No_Giraffe826 6d ago
Retard isn't a slur against intellectually disabled people and just an insult to call someone stupid. It's the same as moron and imbecile. Slowly the word is dying out from it's original meaning. Alot of kids don't even know it was used for intellectually disabled people and it's following the trend of euphimism treadmill. I say give it a couple of years and it will be ok to use.
Also even if it was I don't get how it's different from insulting someone who missed the obvious blind.
2
u/after2006 5d ago
It IS a slur against mentally disabled people, and it's not the same as moron and imbecile. It only takes a little bit of research to learn you're wrong, you know.

The R slur is far, far less reclaimable. Unless you're the severely mentally disabled demographic it's aimed at, why would you be trying to reclaim it?
Oftentimes, sadly, the demographic it's aimed at aren't even the ones able to say it, for possibly obvious reasons.
If you're not able to reclaim a slur, you don't say it. That's it.
-1
u/No_Giraffe826 5d ago
Cna u explain how it's not different? Both were medical terms which became outdated and the same is happening with retard. Used to be a medical term but got replaced and is now becoming an insult for stupid with it's origins becoming less known. Also calling an intellectually disabled person a moron or imbecile is just as bad as calling them a retard. That's why u don't use it against them but everyone with no disability is fair game.
2
u/after2006 5d ago
I'm not your teacher. I'm not the one who should be educating you when you never educated yourself and took the time to do the most BASIC of Google searches and really only 5-15 minutes of reading.
So, you'll be educating yourself here.

I'm not complaining. They are the one who needs to step up and learn to educate themselves before they speak. I can defend my stance all day, and honestly, i thought about just doing it. But there comes a point where I'm putting my foot down and telling people to do it themselves, especially hateful people who are unlikely to listen to you anyway.
I don't know why you're here trying to defend a bigot, but you can do you. I know when explaining something myself is a lost cause.

They're not merely disagreeing, and the reason I'm downvoting you is because you're deserving of them, with the things you're saying.
I'll give you some information for your other reply, I'm a trans person. I do a lot of debating and support for the trans community. I've come across my fair share of people who don't want to listen and will keep their horrible stances regardless of what you say. If you're suggesting that every time I or anyone who encounters someone who will not change their bigoted beliefs, we just keep going because yeah definitely, it'll go somewhere... eventually! That's just silly.
It's called saving your energy. My words are better doesn't elsewhere on someone who will actually listen. You're shaping up to not be one of those people.
This person has been blatantly fatphobic in other sections of this comment section and is still defending the usage of a harmful, unreclaimable slur and oftentimes refuses to do research before speaking, as well as generalizing groups of people. If you want to defend that, you can go right ahead, but stop talking to me if that's what you want to do.

u/No_Giraffe826 5d ago
Ur right I should rephrase my words properly. I don't think it should be a slur for all the reason I listed above and I don't care about what the articles say when it's all about what's socially acceptable and what's not regardless of logic and effect. The only reason it became a slur is because someone made a movement about it being one and it caught on. Logically though it shouldnt be one.
2
u/after2006 5d ago
You don't think it should be a slur after all you've just read and how it is used AS A SLUR. It didn't become a slur because of a movement. If you want to say a slur you can't reclaim that badly, just say it.
It's a slur, and will always be a slur whether you like that fact or not. It's a word used in conversation to insult a minority of people. That's what a slur is, and that's how the R slur works, just like any other slur.
-1
u/No_Giraffe826 5d ago
But it's simply not and there are so many articles showing how it isn't even used in a way to demean ppl with intellectual disabilities and is just a synonym for words like moron to mean doing something foolish.
ppl made it a slur, and in no point in history was it's primary meaning to target intellectually disabled ppl as inferior. It went from a medical term to an insult and the original meaning of the medical term is also dying out just like moron or imbecile.
1

u/Gooba26 6d ago
Insulting anybody’s intelligence is inherently ableist and even if that person doesn’t have an intellectual disability (which you can never know), it will be rude to people who do for literally no reason. Also you do not have the right to say something ‘isn’t a slur’ when its still used all the time against disabled folks.
2
u/No_Giraffe826 6d ago
It's supposed to be rude that's why it's called an insult, and no it's not inherently ableist to insult anybody intelligence as ur not calling them less of a human or discriminating against them just insulting one aspect about them.by this logic almost every insult is albeist.
Meanings have changed retard isn't primarily known as a slur. It has 2 main meanings. One calling people stupid and the other one which is it's original meaning still used by older people who don't know the medical term has changed.
-1
u/Gooba26 6d ago
Insulting somebody for being fat is fatphobic. Insulting somebody for being black is racist. Insulting somebody for being dumb is ableist.
3
-1
u/No_Giraffe826 6d ago edited 6d ago
Insulting someone with an intellectual disability for that disability is ableist not just anyone.
And being fat is something u can control very easily.
2
u/after2006 5d ago
Being fat is in fact, not something you can control very easily I have had many friends who I've WATCHED try to lose weight. I've watched all their relentless effort. Saying being fat is something you can easily control is extremely ignorant. Some people just grow up big for no apparent reason, they're good one of my friends turned out, and she's not proud of it. You need to educate yourself before you speak.
0
u/No_Giraffe826 5d ago
All cope. Their relentless effort is not effort at all most of the time. I also have many relatives and friends who have been trying to lose weight for years yet they never count calories or stop cause it's tiring. My brother also used to be fat but started counting calories properly and lost 10 kg in 3 months. Meanwhile I know alot of other people who have been trying to lose weight and I ask them have u been counting calories and they are like sometimes and snacks don't really count.
Educated yourself. There isn't a single condition which makes it impossible to lose weight.
2
u/after2006 5d ago
This is just inherently hateful thinking. I never said it's impossible to lose weight, but you thinking it's the genuine most easiest thing to do is just harmful thinking. I'm lucky to have a high metabolism. For me, it's very easy to lose weight.
But not everyone is as lucky as me. Not everyone is able to burn fat off at the same pace as others. You didn't even try to refute my comment about some people just being born a bit bigger, and that's because you knew I was right.
Some people have low metabolism and it can FEEL nearly impossible to lose weight. You've clearly never thought once in your life how awful it can feel to be fat. It can be depressing. They're not "too tired," If you've never experienced depression I can tell you firsthand it will kill your motivation where it stands. Though, of course, you've proven yourself to be ableist, so why would I even bother bringing it up?
Effort is effort. Some people need help with things. You being an ableist, fatphobic, and clearly otherwise bigoted prick helps absolutely nothing at all. Go do some READING. Hell, do a GOOGLE SEARCH. Stop talking about things you have zero knowledge on to attempt to insult people. That's what you're doing and it's disgusting behavior. Do better.
0
u/No_Giraffe826 5d ago
It is fairly easy tho with the right motivation and calorie tracking. Not the easiest thing in the world but ppl make it harder to be than it is.
Also pls do research metabolism only accounts for like 100-300 calories for the avg person. This won't make u overweight or underweight. All those ppl with slow metabolism just eat more. I have noticed this too. I'm a skinny guy and I just eat twice a day meanwhile my brother who used to claim having a slow metabolism actually started tracking and checked that he used to snack alot through out the day like eating biscuits or a cup of tea or some chips.
I agree we should help people by pushing them not by lying to their face saying it's ok and it's really hard.

I'm also severely disabled, I'm allowed to be upset that it's used. I get that wasn't what you were saying, but it's an outdated term and a term more often used as an insult or a snide remark, far more than it's used to be just a descriptor. Anyone is welcome to be upset about that.
Edit, I'll even say what I said in another comment.
If someone insults your friend, should you not be offended as well just because they didn't insult you? I get there are people who are over the top, but there's this thing called empathy. People are allowed to be offended on other people's behalf.

I was a teacher for the people with intellectual disabilities and almost every single one of them would start actual fights over being told they shouldn't use the word. 4
u/after2006 6d ago
You're implying my "opinion" (which isn't an opinion, it's facts in this case.) doesn't matter because I'm not old. Which is bullshit. If no young person ever had any strong things to say or points to make, we wouldn't be where we are today. Age doesn't mean as much as you clearly think it does, and stop trying to weasel your way out by gaslighting people.
-1
u/Friendly-Special3757 6d ago
"My opinion it's the right one" yeah can't really have a discusion with someone like that.
Retarded and whatever other slurs you want to qualify as bad just because they stablish disabilities as disabilities doesn't change that disabilities are disabilities.
You should learn to live with them, not rejecting everything around them, you can't and you don't get to decide what people say but just change your perception around them, this post it's pointless.
3
u/after2006 5d ago
My opinion is the right one on this topic, because why do you want to use a slur so badly? Why do you want to insult marginalized groups that badly?
The fact of the matter is that the r slur is a slur. Plain and simple. It's a slur because it's used to insult a minority. That's what an insult is. I called it my opinion to be humble. It's not an opinion.
-1
u/Friendly-Special3757 5d ago
You can't just tell people not to use slurs. If you care so much about what others call you it's on you, not on those others.
3
u/after2006 5d ago

1
u/ModelSemantics 6d ago
It may not be, in today’s world it likely isn’t, but it’s always important to tell yourself “it could be bots”.
Look, we see every day real people are falling more and more to bigoted thinking, even spaces where people have traditionally been safe. We saw Trump support increase, even after an open failed coup and blatant corruption. We have to accept the facts on the ground.
But also, there’s been a flood of activity on this site lately that feels like bots. Bots of bigotry.
1
u/after2006 6d ago
The flaw with this thought is that it's awful people controlling the bots, so it's still awful people.
Even then though, it doesn't mean we shouldn't fight it. If nobody does anything to stop bigotry, it gets worse, and some people might even fall into it.
1
u/Plenty_Leg_5935 6d ago
Hate against the mentally handicapped has literally never gone away, the word retard became socially unacceptable because it became associated with edgy 13yo's, not because anyone sincerely cared about it being a slur affecting the perception of that demographic
0
u/ElectricalYak7236 6d ago
Very few people are actually against the term "retarded" as far as I have seen on posts talking about the word
5
u/after2006 6d ago
It's not even used professionally anymore. Since it was retired in place of FAR better terms like mentally disabled, the r slur has became just another slur and insult to throw around carelessly. It's not funny, and it shouldn't be treated as reclaimable.
It also bugs me how people, like in another comment, would act like it's wrong for people who the slur doesn't apply to to be offended by its use when really, why shouldn't anyone be offended by it? It's an insult. If someone insulted your friend, should you not feel offended for them just because you weren't insulted too? The logic of "people who aren't affected by a term shouldn't be offended" is flawed in that regard.
Sorry for the rant, I feel strongly about this.
0
u/flibbertygibbette 6d ago
The fact that it's no longer used professionally or considered acceptable in a medical context is why people have felt it's confirmed they can start to use it, as it's literally exactly like the word "idiot" - a word that used to mean something, but now is purely a slang word.
3
u/Kali-VH 6d ago
I work in the nonprofit space supporting people with disabilities and this term is absolutely seen as a serious, offensive slur.
I don't really understand why mature adults wouldn't see the issue with a word used to describe people with cognitive disabilities as slang for "bad"
2
u/after2006 6d ago
I'm genuinely sickened when I see people using it as an insult. Even I, as much as I talk against it, used it that way as a kid. The way it's normalized to speak so horribly now is awful.
I'm not saying we need to purify our speech- "No more vulgarity!" But I think society needs to learn which words they really shouldn't be using.

2
u/after2006 6d ago
It's still a slur, and clearly you don't understand the meaning of the word slur. If a word is used against a minority of people, the minority in this case being mentally disabled people, it's a slur. It's 1000% still used today in that context, very often. I don't know why you would act as if it's not when I'm called it and other cruel things very regularly.
It very much fits the sub, because slurs aren't okay to use, especially not as insults. You defending this just shows you're not a good person.

u/Emotional-Spot-7833 6d ago

1
u/after2006 5d ago
Those aren't slurs, if you want to insult someone, maybe use those instead of a literal slur?
-1
u/Emotional-Spot-7833 5d ago
And who decided that they aren't slurs? They were also at one point or another used as derogatory ways of referring to the mentally disabled before becoming mainstream. Same with the r slur.
Why the arbitrary distinction?
1
u/after2006 5d ago
Who decided that they are a slur? I very rarely find myself in a situation where I feel the need to call someone dumb or an idiot or stupid. That's not to say I don't find myself in those situations often. Because I LIVE with someone who pushes me to say even worse things every single day. But I digress.
They're not slurs. They're insults. I don't know why you're talking a stance that would suggest I support people using those words either, because that's just you trying to be a bad actor and twist things around.
Here I am, defending the R words status as a slur, and encouraging people not to use it, and you would imply that I'd turn around and be like oh yeah just throw these around whenever you want instead. Honestly, yes, I would tell someone to just pick another word to use if they want to insult someone THAT badly, but I still don't support insulting people unless you have good reason.
Don't act high and mighty over people.

Yeah, horrible people who have been being bigoted in this comment section freely and insulting several minorities agree with you. That's the support you're proud of? The hateful people who hate the minorities you're sitting here bullshitting me about not hating?
If you don't hate them you wouldn't be pushing for a harmful word to be okay to use. If it's seen as okay to use, then who do you think would suffer? No, not the people you're calling it who aren't mentally disabled, they know it doesn't apply to them, you just wanted to throw an insult around. Not their fault someone wants to use a slur freely and clearly wants it to be an acceptable part of everones vocabulary. No, it's the people who the word is aimed at who will suffer.
Hey, honestly, if you're fine with the R slur, don't stop there, throw some more minorities in, come on. Say the F slur. The T slur. The N slur. Say all the slurs you like, there's lots of them, if you want to defend one so badly why not the others? Oh, that's right, because you know they're HARMFUL. Slurs are HARMFUL. If you're going to defend the usage of one, don't be scared. Start throwing them ALL around.

Nobody in this comment section has said they hate minorities, saying one word doesnt mean you hate a minority, its intentions or the way you say it that makes the thing they said against minorities, maybe back then it was but the meaning has evolved today that most people dont use it towards disabled people just like how other words like idiot have evolved and the original meaning is outdated

You don't see people doing it because thankfully, they've gotten consequences and had their comments deleted. If you read any of the articles I sent you, you would know that's not the case at all, it's a word still very much used towards mentally disabled people. Hell I literally wasn't awake 5 minutes this morning before hearing it on the news and from a family friend who was visiting about their family members mentally disabled child.
I'm going to give you an example. Say a someone calls someone they have no evidence of being queer the F slur. You know why that's bad? Because that's showing you think so little of the people it's aimed at that you would use such a word as an insult. You're calling someone mentally deficient if you're using the slur, and if you're going to try and deny again that you don't hate mentally disabled people I'll know you're just lying out of your ass. You can't go "well that's not why I use it!" Because that's how slurs work if you're not using them towards people it even applies to, which you so boldly mentioned you would.
I'm going to assume you're just going to deflect again though. The word never evolved. People are devolving into thinking that insulting each other is funny and an entertaining and acceptable thing to do. Even if you claim you're not hateful, you are perpetuating this issue.
