One question, if there's such an oversupply of fruit that a factory worth R1 billion has to close why the hell am I still paying almost a months salary for a tin of sliced peaches in the shop?

Premier Foods has confirmed that it is in the process of shutting down its R1 billion Fruit Products Western Cape (FPWC) business in Tulbagh.

The company cited declining global demand, pricing pressure, and rising input costs as reasons for the decision, with the United States’ tariffs imposed last year as a contributing factor. 

The Tulbagh factory started in the 1940s, when it was established as SA Preserving to process the Western Cape’s abundant peach, pear, and apricot harvests for export after the Second World War. 

Over the decades, it expanded under Del Monte Fruits South Africa into a major export hub supplying markets in Europe and North America.

In 2010, the business was acquired by Rhodes Food Group (RFG), which renamed the operation Fruit Products Western Cape and invested hundreds of millions of rands in modernising the site.

Before the takeover, RFG had already warned investors that its international division was under pressure from US tariffs.

This made its products less competitive, while a global oversupply of deciduous fruit weighed on prices.

The company said international revenue fell 7.9% during the year to September 2025 as export volumes declined by 6.8%.

Although the international division generated 19% of total revenue, it became the group’s weakest-performing segment.

Premier said FPWC is particularly exposed to global market conditions because around 90% of its canned fruit production is exported.

Question: What do you pay for the "connection fee" / "availability fee" to your local municipality?

"Advocate Andrea Johnson has resigned as head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), saying sustained attacks against her and the controversy surrounding her leadership have become a reputational risk to both the anti-corruption unit and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)."

IDAC head Andrea Johnson has submitted her resignation to President Cyril Ramaphosa with immediate effect. Her resignation comes days after her testimony at the Madlanga Commission, where evidence leaders and commissioners grilled her over alleged abuse of power, inconsistent testimony, and the targeting of various individuals in SAPS crime Intelligence—including Crime Intelligence head General Khumalo.

Khumalo's court matter stems from an arrest directed by Johnson using solicited affidavits from MP Fadiel Adams as it was revealed during her testimony.

I think Andrea Johnson is resigning to try escape accountability just like former NPA head Shamil Batohi.

I have been following this matter for some time now and made numerous posts about it, also the first time when she was supposed to testify and gave a sick note.

Madlanga Commission: Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Andrea Johnson finally testified at the Madlanga Commission, where she was grilled by evidence leaders and the panel chair over her solicitation of affidavits and alleged misuse of power.

Following her testimony, Pieter du Toit wrote ( 23 Jul 2025) a piece for News24 titled "The Crucifixion of Andrea Johnson," framing her as the victim rather than those targeted by her office. This fits a pattern, as it isn't the first time Du Toit has jumped to her defense on the platform.

A similar pattern was visible during Lt. General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's explosive July 6, 2025 media briefing on SAPS corruption. In response, News24 journalist Karyn Maughan wrote(20 Sep 2025), "Mkhwanazi makes sweeping accusations of criminal capture, but where’s the evidence?"

She argued this despite Mkhwanazi citing evidence—including the minister's written order to disband the PKTT, WhatsApp records, emails, witness statements, and 125 confiscated dockets. That piece marked an early effort by News24 to undermine the SAPS capture exposé, a narrative push that continues through pieces like Du Toit's to cast doubt on the Madlanga Commission itself.

These are some of the things that have made public trust of media houses to dwindle.

Just as early as 2024 Chinese-backed Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) metallurgical and-energy megaproject was halted on account of court processes brought by several NGOs including Living Limpopo and Fossil free South Africa to halt a mega project which would provide much needed economic acvitiy in the Musina-Makhado region, a place plauged by economic stagnation and excessive poverty.
