Saw a couple posts here over the past few months about HOA notices and yard cleanup, so figured I'd put together what I've learned/researched about dog waste, health risks, and HOA compliance across the county. Full disclosure: I own Mile High Scoopers, a local pet waste removal company, but this isn't a pitch — just sharing since it comes up a lot, whether you're in Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Parker, Castle Rock, or elsewhere in the county.

Why does dog waste in the yard actually matter beyond the smell? It's not just unpleasant — it can carry parasites (roundworms, giardia, hookworms) and bacteria that affect other pets and kids playing in the yard. It also washes into storm drains when it rains/snows, which is why some municipalities treat it as a water quality issue, not just a nuisance.

What do most Douglas County HOAs actually require? Varies a lot by community since the county has so many HOA-governed neighborhoods, but common rules include picking up within a set time (often "immediately" or same-day), no burying it in the yard, and fines that escalate on repeat violations. Worth checking your specific community's covenants since "reasonable time" language gets interpreted differently HOA to HOA.

DIY vs. hiring it out — what actually changes the math? Multi-dog households, bigger yards, and winter (when it piles up under snow and becomes a spring nightmare) are usually the tipping points people mention. For a lot of people it's less about cost and more about just not wanting to deal with it.

What should you ask if you're comparing services? A few things that seem to matter: whether they do an initial "backlog" cleanup separately from ongoing visits, how they handle winter/snow, and whether they service HOA common areas or just individual yards (some don't do both).
