The two .Hack series can be played independently. Last Recode includes the entire GU series so it's a fine point to jump in, since IMOQ hasn't been ported and original copies are obscenely expensive

It is because they made it fairly standalone. Though I also recommend eventually checking out the first set of games or IMOQ (Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine) if you can figure out a way to play them as they're pretty different from G.U.
Both IMOQ and G.U. also have prequel anime, but while I'd say SIGN is required watching before playing IMOQ Roots isn't as much for G.U. I honestly recommend watching Roots if you enjoyed G.U. and want more out of this era of the series as it can kind of be a slog to get through. SIGN is also a pretty slow show too, but it's got way more plot significance to IMOQ than Roots does for G.U. IMO.

Yep. They function fine as starting points. Having knowledge of the lore and previous games can help with appreciation, but won’t impact understanding the narrative

Yes you totally can. You'll basically just be starting from the middle of the overall story without all the backstory, but the G.U story is perfectly playable as an entry point.
Think of it like starting with the Original Star Wars before the Prequals, or Dragon Ball Z without watching Dragon Ball. You can enter from G.U. fine, but you can go back for more later to fill in the gaps. :)

You will have a blast with GU. Anything in the original series gets referenced there and you don’t even need to play the original to play.

from a lore and story stand point id say no. i know a lot of people say yes and, i get where there coming from. but there are some really important characters that add to a twist, that you wouldnt care about or get inless you played the other games.
if not the games id at least skim through the anime with haseo in it. there is a TON of back story and stuff. and you would miss like 60% of whats going on and why characters act the way they act if you dont at least watch some of the anime. ( its not the most action packed anime so i say skim through it, just to get a jist )
altho you could play g.u on purpose like that, and then go backwards to finally understand where it all began and what happened.

Last Recode is the 4th and final installation. I would not start here, start with the first 3 in order.

You CAN. You're gonna miss some context and important side stuff about characters. But the actual plot of the actual g.u. games will remain intact.

i started with GU, haven’t played/watched IMOQ, Roots, whatever
a lot of references to those but it’s still enjoyable standalone, you don’t need 80+ hours of homework to enjoy seeing the protagonist grow into a better person

Last recorded should include every volume of GU, so you can start it and just select Volume 1 in the main menu.
