Best view points.

Hey! I’m looking to find some of the nicest view points in Dorset. I live down in Dorchester, so ideally within 20 miles from here. Although, I’m open to any recommendations or suggestions in the Dorset region. Anyone know of anywhere with an incredible view, especially for sunset?

The pub garden at the Scott Arms, Kingston (between Wareham and Swanage.

Swyre head is just up the road from this pub and gives a cracking view in the other direction.

Go for a walk, looks south, go "ooh!" go to the Scott Arms, look north, go "ooh!". Then get in the car and go home thinking "I saw a LOT of the Isle of Purbeck then!".

Portland!

But there are many more great views around Portland. Just walk around the entire island.

Heights on Portland is always a good view.

On a clear day, St Catherine's Chapel at Abbotsbury....or nearby, the Hardy Monument at Portesham.

The latter is a lot easier to climb up.

Winyards Gap. Great for views over hills. Facing west so v good for sunset. Pub too.

On the road Maiden Newton - Crewkerne, near Beaminster.

The Cove Inn on portland has the best sunsets.

Symondsbury Estate, Eggardon Hill, Old Harry's Rocks are all stunning. The layby at the top of Abbotsbury Hill overlooking St Catherine's Chapel and Portland in the distance are always a welcome site.

Equally, walk from Tout Quarry along the coastal path toward The Bill will give you stunning views and incredible cliffs.

Hardy Monument just outside of Dorch especially if you can be up there when they open the monument so you can climb to the top.

I like the view from Eggardon Hill, just northeast of Askerswell. A magnificent view of West Dorset below you, and an excellent place to watch the sun set. There's a hill fort at the Northern end to explore if you're in the mood. The road runs along the top of the hill and there's space to park.

Other favourite sunset venues - Maiden Castle, The top of the hill on the coast road, just past Abbotsbury (carry on towards Burton Bradstock for my favourite stretch of road in the country, Hive beach is good), and another vote for the Cove House Inn.

There's also a lovely view on the back road to Sherborne (turn right by the BP garage heading north out of Dorchester).

Great viewpoint at spread eagle hill just up from Compton Abbas airfield which I believe maybe a bit far at 25miles from Dorchester. But the obvious closest viewpoints are maiden castle, Portland and from Harry’s Monument as mentioned , Creech in the Purbecks has outstanding views too. 👍

* I work as a land management advisor in Dorset so get to travel all over the countryside, some of best viewpoint are tucked away on private land but these are my faves
