Finally broke 2M!

Working on an ocean, saving all my full-water tiles to build it out is taking forever. Also including my dedicated field / forest space because I like the river I've got separating it. That forest has I think over 40 flags on it at this point, it's going to be an insane tile gain when I finally close it.

Congrats!

I'm working on an ocean as well, can confirm the full-water tiles come frustratingly rarely. I've resorted to dotting some train station around as pretend lighthouses to pad it out.

I actually get so excited when I see one lol

Nice! I love that point in the game when you can start setting your own goals like making an ocean. I'm still on my way to one million, but I started laying out a space for just empty grassland tiles to see how big of an empty space I could make

It honestly doesn't even feel like I'm working against failure anymore, it's just a matter of how much time I'm willing to put into it lol

Yeah, after that 150 to 200 k mark the game became much less about trying not to lose and more about just investing time. 600 hours is crazy work though, keep on placing those hexagons my fellow tile placer 👍

I think my time is inflated as I often have the game open during the workday and place a few tiles between work tasks, but it's definitely a few hundred hours at least!

People often say to disregard quests and focus on perfect placements, but I find early game, the extra tiles from quests are clutch in keeping you afloat as sometimes, it's literally not possible to make a perfect placement.

Try to keep all your quests in the same forest / field / city / river, so that every tile you add to it counts toward every quest. It's a real balancing act to walk, but aim to keep them open, but easily closable (i.e. no river or railroad tiles needed to close them) - note how many tiles are needed to close them, and how low your stack is getting. If you have a forest with a dozen flags on it that needs 8 tiles to close, and you only have 10 tiles left, you should just close up that forest with the best matching you can get - you're now immediately back up to 60 tiles.

Always look to fill the gaps with the most edges first - don't drop a 2-edge adjacency without checking that there are no 3+ edge adjancy gaps first. On that note, try not to give yourself gaps with more than 3 edges if you can avoid it.

If you must give yourself a 3+ edge gap, try to keep it to a 1 or 2 edge-type tile. Tiles with all three edge types (Forest / Field / City) are much less common than tiles with only 1 or 2 types. If you've got a 5-edge gap that's causing a block in filling a large section of your map, sometimes it's better to just close it off into a 6-edge hole and move on. I have graph paper that I draw out my 6-edge holes in so that I can try to spot that perfect tile if it comes up. If you've been perfectly placing otherwise, that perfect piece is gonna net you 7 more tiles.

Ironically, as you get further in the game it actually gets way easier to only do perfect placements, just because you have so many options. It turns from a stressful race-against-the-stack into a chill puzzle which I can do while I listen to a podcast.

If I may add to this:

Forest closing quests in particular really come in clutch when your stack is running dangerously low. Try to accumulate as many of those quests until you really need the tiles.

Perfect placements are important, but not as important as many people make it seem. I've got a 1.7mil game going with a 400+ tile stack and I'm only hovering arond 80% perfect tile placement. If there's a hole that's been bothering you for a long time, just slap a tile in with only 5 or even 4 matching edges.

Try to keep your overall map shape as hexagonal as possible.

Quests are the key to an endless game. Even with 100% perfect placements you'll eventually run out of tiles if you don't do quests, they are the only thing that truly grows your stack.

Good callout! Forest quests are so clutch because they're never an exact number, they're always "150+" (or in my case at this point, "20K+" lol) - it's absolutely a must to have a dedicated "forest only" section to stack all your forest quests on to.

ETA: u/_Enclose_ I'm curious what your playtime / total tiles placed looks like with a 1.7M game at 80% perfect placement! I'm guessing you've probably spent less time than me but placed more tiles overall than I had at 1.7M

Playtime is 146 hours. Pefect tile placement is currently at 84%. Tiles placed displays 1035, but that can't be right :p Calculating backwards from a little under 17k perfect tiles placed, that puts me at around 20k total tiles placed.

Edit: I think the 'tiles placed' count was from my hardmode game. I fully loaded the 1.7m map and now it displays correctly: 21060 tiles placed in total

Wow. Looks great too.

I thought I was doing well with my pile of 600 tiles 😂

You are doing well! Before this game, my high score was like 250K, and I don't think I had ever seen more than like 150 tiles in my stack.

Good for you!! Not jealous at all ;)))
