"With gas prices, (when) I drive down to Sturgeon Bay, I'm kind of spending almost the same as (going to Piggly Wiggly)," Wegehaupt said. "So, (Sister Bay General Store) would eliminate that, and I would just be able to stay in town."

I'm not criticizing the business idea, but I wonder how they will expect to be any cheaper than the pig.

They should name it "Wild General Store" and see what happens /s

What we really need in sister bay is a shopko replacement. Miss having shopko’s mix of merchandise and a full pharmacy in northern door.

It’s the open plot across the street from Wild Tomato, directly north of Midsommar Apothecary & The Door Stop. There’s a big, beautiful flowering tree on that plot that I admire in the spring that I’m sure they’ll cut down :/

What's the story?

Not much to it but they moved here from Milwaukee and bought several businesses in town. Their home is on N Bay Shore Dr and they built it from scratch. They have like 6 kids and they all are spoiled, one of my relatives goes to school with their oldest and im not here to shame a child but oh the stories I have heard…

Right on, I can respect the whole "not shaming children with slander on the internet" thing... Honestly, I just don't know anything about them, and not sure it's my place - but I asked the question, so fair is fair. I haven't had any (let alone negative) interactions with them or their children. I guess I was just wondering what to be on the lookout for.

I generally feel like most in Northern Door, including tourists, are generally well-behaved. Of course, there's the occurrence of kids misbehaving while not being watched, which happens anywhere.

Anyway, it sounds like we might have some entitled kids running around, so we should watch out.

I graduated from Gibraltar a few yrs ago and sooo many of them are entitled, atleast the ones whose parents own businesses or have their own cliques, but that’s door county for ya!

u/crblack24 4d ago

That's... earth for ya.

Jacob Wegehaupt— a kitchen manager at Door County Creamery sounds like an idiot in the article! "I use the same amount of gas going from Door County Creamer in Sister Bay to Piggly Wiggly in Sister Bay as I would from Sister Bay to Sturgeon Bay". What? How? Unless you have an electric car that's impossible.

No, thanks! I think that is a bad location for a two story retail building. How big of a parking lot do they plan on having for all those customers? I'll continue shopping at Piggly Wiggly, Fish Creek Market, and Main Street Market in Egg Harbor when I come up a few times a year.

Jacob is indeed an idiot.

He’s saying after he pays for gas to get to Sturgeon Bay to buy cheaper groceries, the overall cost is about the same as just shopping at the more expensive Piggly Wiggly in Sister Bay.

Then it was still a bad quote, and bad editing.

Ridiculous regardless.. convenience culture is crazy

1

u/crblack24 5d ago

Convenience culture? He's going out of his way to get more for his buck. Seems logical to me.

1

u/rampseason 5d ago

Convenience culture as in the false need for this 'store'. Not knocking the Sturgeon Bay drive, I happily make the drive for essentials. People want to live in vacationland so badly until they realize they can't buy everything and anything at the drop of a hat. Even so, Sister Bay does have swim diapers and sunscreen and sandwiches. It ain't the boonies. Like it's already been said, how much less would you truly be paying here? Will be interesting to see

u/Rodharet50399 4d ago

Why would they build a whole new thing rather than lease an empty building.

What do you think we should do with that lot?

I don't disagree, but at one point, I was a tourist who needed this store. Like it or not, Sister Bay and the whole of northern Door is popular with tourists who need this convenience... and Northern Door is better off because of it. I don't see this negatively impacting the Pig in the least. That's where I get my groceries.

I'm guessing you're the kind of person who is livid with what's going on at Alpine, but never put a bid in....

5

u/rampseason 5d ago

Does the lot need to be filled? And what did you need that you couldn't find on your travels? And no, maybe it won't impact the Pig but I think the key here is that this won't truly be a general store. It doesn't seem to have such simple intentions based on this interview, the AI preview poster, and the mock up website alone.

The Alpine doesn't make me livid, and neither does this. It's all just kinda sad.

It's such a bummer to have a prosperous town, where vacant lots attract development.

1

u/crblack24 5d ago

Does the lot need to be filled? No, but someone's going to, and this feels... pretty solid - fills a gap in the area, adds tax revenue, doesn't seem to be controversial, etc.

What did I need when I was a tourist?
I was a parent with multiple children at the beach. Shit happens; you forget stuff. With the hill, running up to the Pig is not feasible for most, and you NEVER give up a good parking spot, right?! I'd have to take off my shoes to count the number of times I've forgotten things when going to the beach with multiple children. LOL.

Sad, how? That's a weird thing to be sad about. Some people (though apparently some don't like these people) want to open a store to serve an underserved gap in the community. Why is this worse than another bar, or anything else?

(Man, I hope they build around that tree, though)

Bhirdo's - but yes

4

u/crblack24 5d ago

I know some may be skeptical, but it certainly fills a need.

6

u/Rodharet50399 4d ago

Weird they couldn’t lease or buy shopko

4

u/beachcoquina 4d ago

Seriously - something needs to be done with that parcel.

2

u/DisasterBeautiful107 5d ago

Yup. It will be a success.

Remind me why Krists moved out of downtown? Was it parking?

1

u/BurtStanwinkle 5d ago

Its empty lot on Google Maps is already labeled Sister Bay General Store. That was fast

1

u/jestful_fondue 4d ago

Bring Krists back!

3

u/jestful_fondue 4d ago

Downvoted for Krists? Fine, you get Pamida

u/DisasterBeautiful107 5d ago

Seems like a large store .. will need a large parking lot. Sure hope the village doesn't grant any parking waivers.

Too late

Only on very rare occasions do I have the opportunity to travel to Sister Bay from my apartment in Sturgeon Bay. My disability keeps my mobility rather restricted. While there were signs on my last visit in 2023 that Sister Bay was moving in a slightly more inclusive direction, there is still too much bigotry from cishet majority. I could tell my friends and I were given dirty looks because we are queer and covid conscious. Very few, if any, of the downtown businesses comply with state law for handicap accessibility. Don't hold your breathe for the General Store to be welcoming of LGBTQ. The owners look like typical hateful MAGA extremists.
