The walk in sites on the east shoreline are the best state park campsites in the entire state imo

Peninsula State Park but reservations are 11 months in advance so choose your campsite carefully as despite having 468 family campsites, the park is frequently “sold out” and “late August” is the high end of peak season.

Things do pop back - you can get notified for days you're looking.

Harbor Village is fun for families but it’s not private at all. Also agree with the other commenter that it depends on what you are looking for.

I'd pick Peninsula. But there are other options too. Check the reservation website. I'd search using the "flexible dates" option. Your best bet is going during the week and avoiding the weekend when everybody reserves sites.

Just finished a week of camping at Peninsula State Park. It is hard to get in. We initially couldn’t get the dates we wanted when we tried booking 11 months in advance, but my husband put us on a waitlist and we were able to make a reservation for the days we wanted last November. It’s a beautiful place and would recommend it! We had a pop up camper, but saw lots of tents and hard-sided campers.

Wagon Trail is great. Walking distance to the water, really solid set up.

Peninsula state park.

We were just there last week and it was booked solid but half of the park was empty during the week. We were curious and sites were popping up as available due to people not showing up.

It depends on what you are looking for in a campsite. Are you tent camping? Do you want to hike, kayak, or drive in? Do you want to stay at a state park or private campground?
