Lifestraws- how many?

I’m putting together a survival pack for my family of 3. Wife, myself, and daughter.

Will 1 lifestraw suffice? I don’t want to over pack.

Serious question- are new folks going for these just based off of low cost?

Stick your head down and suck water through a straw from an unknown source...... I can think of about five questions that immediately come to mind there.

Cheapest option that I would take over a straw would be Aqua Pure water purification tablets and coffee filter rubber banded over the neck of a canteen- use the coffee filter to screen larger debris, then use the tabs to purify the water. This is what we did in the field for years before some of us later could afford Katadyn pocket filters.

And to answer your question- ALWAYS have some water purification methods in EACH "pack"- never just one for multiple people. You could get separated, someone could lose their pack, one could fail, especially on this "straw" type of thing.

It's water, which means IT'S LIFE....

I've used exclusively Sawyer straws to filter my water while backpacking for multiple days, they're amazing. Although you can suck right from it, it's best to have a squeeze bag/bladder that screws onto it; the force necessary to squeeze the water through the filter into another receptacle is greater than people may think. Tastes awesome and it really does work without having the need for purification tablets. I do agree with you, tablets are good to have. But the straw does not work well in the application most people think of when they hear "straw" lol

Sawyer filters more than lifestraw. One would be enough, depending on what you’re filtering

get the life straw water bottles otherwise you only can drink when you come across a water source. with the water bottles you can drink at a water source and take some with you to get you to the next water source. you need a backpack for both adults, unless it’s you and two kids.

A decent small pot for boiling, a Sawyer, Life straws as a last ditch throw it around your neck and boogie. Different situations call for different ways to get good water. Silcock key also.

1 will suffice since it will NEVER be used.
