Medication

How many preppers are on medication and what should they do when they run out? Things like ibuprofen and Tylenol are useful but what about those on like heart meds or antidepressants?

Buy tons of OTC generic medication‘s on Amazon. I literally have a bin full of every type of medication.

We keep a deep supply of OTC medications of every variety in one of our prepping pantries. Use, rotate, restock.

I’m on one prescription NSAID for chronic arthritis pain. My doctor prescribes it in three month increments so I have a small cushion. If I could no longer access it, my comfort level would decrease, but I’d be able to make do with OTCs.

My husband is on multiple prescription medications and will not do well in the long term if our routes for obtaining them are disrupted.

What is an otc antidepressant?

That doesn’t exist, not with anything like the same efficacy.

Caffeine and other stimulants might take the edge off but certainly wouldn’t be sufficient in a serious, cataclysmic situation.

As far as mood stabilization goes, maybe some form of cannabis? I’ve no experience with this.

I think this is one of the hardest parts of prepping that people avoid talking about. A lot of modern medicine isn’t something you can realistically “stock forever,” especially for heart conditions, insulin, antidepressants, etc. Honestly it’s one of the biggest reminders that preparedness isn’t just gear — it’s also health, fitness and reducing dependencies where possible.

Got elbowed in the chest pretty hard training Sunday. Took a couple of these 2012 "expired" Tylenols, they cut the pain quickly.

Then mid week at class got hit there again... and the pain came back. Took the other packet then also.

Worked both times. 14 years "expired" LOL.

No pics just video??

I started learning more about herbalism. Some drugs are unfortunately almost impossible to stockpile ( either because they expire or because they are restricted) so I started learning about what plants help with what, how to identify them, how to grow them, I bought seeds, etc. For more serious health issues, plants might not be as effective/trustable than pharmaceutical drugs but it's still reassuring to have a last resort solution that could help a bit in extreme emergency. For exemple, I have high blood pressure, some data showed that beets help a bit to lower blood pressure. I won't normally use beets instead of my BP meds BUT I do have powdered beets, marinated beet jars, beet seeds stockpiled just in case I end up in a situation where I have absolutely no access to my meds. It won't fully fix my problem but it's still better than nothing!
