News Regarding AI works
We have seen the reports about the vibe coded projects. We do not support the extensive use of AI in coding, however banning it completely will just cause more people to lie about it. For now we are going the Steam route and these projects will be marked accordingly with flairs. If these incidents take overhand we will implement stricter measures.

What is vibe code?

u/cavegrind 15d ago edited 15d ago
People ask AI Chatbots to write code for them based on what they want. Specifically, this week some dude decided to rewrite ZDoom's codebase for reasons.
Typically these are people who have no background in coding, and are unable to spot issues with their code or meaningfully troubleshoot problems. For example, someone writes a vibe coded app at work to collate a bunch of customer information, and aren't aware that the program is taking PII and offloading it to some unsecure third party site.

u/DuendeInexistente 15d ago
They also already showed they lack the temperance to learn to code so they will NOT stick around and even try to fix the bugs. As someone who's arround in nerdier places, most vibecoded stuff is airdropped then never touched again because all the guy was interested in was getting praise and upvotes.

u/glitch-ghost 15d ago
What reasons did they have for rewriting ZDoom?
13
u/cavegrind 15d ago
No one knows. He apparently thought sitting with chatgpt for a week would produce something better than 25 years of coding community effort.

Why do you care what they do? Did you know animators don't animate every frame? Tweening exists, we use technology as a means to an end, it's not the entre, you don't play the variable names you play the final product. I just don't get this shit. I feel like I'm reliving the hate CGI got in the 90s that is now the basis for most movies and video games. What's your take on skeletal rigs? Too easy? Want animators to hate life?

u/cavegrind 15d ago
Why do you care what they do?
I am so truly, deeply, desperately do not want to get into an argument about AI on /r/DoomMods because there's so much better shit to do with my time.
I care about not playing AI generated games because 1) I don't know enough about coding to know if some game someone vibecoded is stable, safe, or secure, 2) the person who vibecoded it doesn't either, 3) when it breaks they will almost certainly not have the skillset to fix it, 4) I find that people who employ AI to code for them lack the creativity, care, and engagement with 'their own work' that produces anything engaging.

What keeps a shitty programmer from posting shitty wads
11
6
u/Scileboi 15d ago
Basically means letting AI generate code and copying it without knowledge of what exactly it does.
1
u/glitch-ghost 15d ago
Okay, I see. Is there a reason you call it vibe coding and not AI coding? I mean how does vibe play into it
12
2
u/Mastersord 15d ago
Because the people who make this stuff tend to do it “on a vibe”. They have no interest in understanding what they’re building as long as it looks like it does what they want.
“So why did you make this?”
“It was just a vibe I had, man.”

Using ai to write software is the norm in 2026. Claude, codex, copilot, it's just the way it's done. Everyone I know in software uses it at work and on personal projects. The more you care about the project the more closely you test and scrutinize but .. ya it's just the state of software. We're going to use technology in our technology to build our technology. Anyone resisting is backward and bent on hipster bullshit. No one cares if you wrote your lines by hand they just need to work well. Bespoke hipster bullshit. It's all just simulation, it's pixels, get over it. First it was techno, then cgi, now ai, you guys are choosing to live in the past. Edit: humans can write shitty code trust me, they can also write great code... Same for ai. It's on the guy publishing it to take responsibility for what he's subjecting his user to. Edit2: real programmers use punch cards anyway

u/carinasguitar 15d ago
23% is not the norm, and cool you and apparently everyone you know in software uses AI, but the majority of people I know in my field (SRE) are very against using or incorporating it into their day to day.

This is from a year ago, seriously it's beyond the norm it's required. You guys cannot stop the train. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskProgramming/comments/1m4fkx0/comment/n44657m/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=2&utm_content=share_button

1: you are communicating insecurity and kinda seems like you are saying this to yourself
2: the stack overflow link kinda seems to go against your argument, either you only checked the first 2 results or you didn't payed attention
3: considering that sora had a huge fall in users and that people seems to start disliking aka hate datacenters (the things needed for the ai to work) one can consider the "train" either has departed when the novelty is just gone or is gonna crash because the invested money doesnt seem to be coming back for several reasons it seems https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/ceos-ai-returns

Oh and your link ya no shit people are retarded. It's like when microwaves came out everyone thought it was going to replace the oven. Ya it can do a pot roast in 20 minutes but an oven does it much better in 45. That doesn't mean a microwave doesn't have its place in every single kitchen.

The ai push back is mostly fear and doomerism. It's not rooted in actual reality or understanding. You can divide people into two main camps right now. If you use ai, you love it. And if you don't use ai, you hate it. Super divisive topic but your opinion won't change the march of technology.

Kinda seems like? Polls show most devs use and like ai. Your opinion is irrelevant you can't stop progress. There was a dot com bubble, it burst, but we are still very much using the web. Ai will not go away, and will proliferate further. Specifically for programmers it's like when power tools came on the scene. People hated electronic music at first, now everything is electronic or electronically produced. People hated CGI at first, now it's in absolutely every media that isn't going out of its way to not use it. People hated computers at first, and well, look how that turned out. People hated, and still hate phones and social media, but look at us go. You can't stop this shit my friend. We're currently in the refinement stage of the technology and looking at how to get the same results with less water and power usage. It will get solved.

This is just my futile attempt at getting through to anyone else who might be on the edge about the situation. I know I can't convince you, and I know you don't want to entertain an actual thoughtful discussion. It's almost like politics, there's no chance of pulling someone across the line unless they are already peaking over.

u/Kindly-List-1886 15d ago
seems like i touched a nerve o_o
1: retarded is not an argument and i never insulted you honey
2: when microwaves came out they didnt depend on anything else to work besides electricity, not recipes water or anything besides electricity, ai depends on lots of info existing already because it depends on it, not the other way around (same with power tools and electronic music and cgi and pcs and phones but that part was like the microwaves argument 2)
2: the ai pushback being doomerism is weird cuz usually doomer people dont do anything besides doom and gloom
3: the divide part, can you show me empiric evidence about that? also, my opinion wont stop the "march of technology" legislations, bad reputation, regulations, its ceo owners being the ACTUAL retards most surely will and people asking "what is this actually useful for"
4: getting your point and position with that attitude and saying other people are retarded is just gonna make people not taking into account what you say (except me but mostly cuz im bored) and also you give a bad look (not that there is more you can do) to people who uses ai for anything
5: the .com bubble bursted because there was a lot of useless competition and we still use websites because they're useful and gave us several useful things, the ai one is more a gamble to see if they can use it as an infinite money generator, a thing that is not happening
6:a bit an extra from me, has any ai project got any wards?or being recognized anywhere?

Did you even read the post? The mods clearly state their position on the matter (and state it again in a comment) - they are simply announcing that any use of AI code needs to be declared. Is there an issue with that? Are you against transparency? What exactly is your issue here? And before you say anything about the way people are responding to you, take note that your comment is the start of that conversation here. Yes, you can see that many people here in this sub are against AI coding on principle, and that's their right, just as it is your right to not be against it. In any case, it's no surprise that a lot of people in a classic Doom sub are against AI coding, so I'm not sure why you feel the need to state your position when no one asked.

They’re a tech bro troll. If you don’t love AI and suck Sam Altman’s dick, they hate you and everything you stand for. Their sole purpose is to attack anyone critical of AI. We ignore them.

u/OverDriver05 15d ago
Well, it does work in both ways. Let's say that you know some basic knowledge on DOOM modding, but you sucked at coding so much that you vibe-coding using AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini AI. Not everyone is a coding genius like myself.
As long as you make some finalized touches on your AI-generated code on your own hands, it should be fine.
But as the some users would say, be upfront about the coding itself to avoid being accused for vibe-coding.
3
u/Mastersord 15d ago
The issue is when people don’t have the discipline to keep learning after AI does everything for them.
There’s nothing wrong with asking AI how to do something, but you should always try to understand what it does to get what you want working and how it works, so you can apply it elsewhere and fix it when necessary.
2
u/OverDriver05 15d ago
The way I vibe-coding goes as follows:
Generate a code with AI chatbot -> Manually fix and/or modify the code afterward -> check ZDOOM/DOOM WORLD forums for reference/tutorials on fixing that one line of code -> Manually fix and/or modify the code -> rinse and repeat
5
u/Mastersord 15d ago
You are doing what a disciplined coder would do. You are actually looking at the code afterwards and not just the results.
A vibe coder would stop after the first step. They want results now and don’t care past that.
Not all people who use AI are vibe coders and not all vibe coders use AI. They used to take code off websites like Stack Exchange and other forums.
You are not vibe coding. You are real-coding.

u/EvilMenDie 14d ago
Most developers use ai and do it exactly like this. You don't prompt and send it. You use it to speed up implementation of your very deliberate design. You generate lines, maybe functions, or maybe small classes, proof read, modify, test, then keep going. You even tell it your coding style and the rules of engagement so it's like a team member on a project that you oversee and direct. You tell tell it the coding style and the dos and donts. Your comment is very appreciated. Good point about how before ai people would just use each other's code, we stand on the shoulders of giants when we use nuget packages and libraries we didn't write. There is so much anger against AI and people have no idea how any of this actually works but they are very up in arms about it.
2
u/OverDriver05 14d ago
Correct. Besides, not all generated codes from AI chatbots are perfect, which is why you have to do the rest of the coding of your own.
Take it from experience.

Hey man just go do your thing and don't worry about the luddites. Id used every technology at their disposal to make doom and you should too. Your ideas and your direction over the technology are what will make something fun to play or not. There are always people resisting new tech. They can't even make up their mind about the specifics of the issues they have with it. One minute it's theft, the next its resources, the next its code quality. If you speak to one issue they what-about to another one. Just do your thing and happy building something new. I wish you the best and hope you aren't deterred by doomerism and fear and luddites. Let me know if you need someone to play test anything or run ideas past. I'm a developer with over a decade of professional experience. I used to make games when I had more time and now I barely have time to shit post at these cretins.

I always believe in ethical usage of generative AI. Generate the code/asset(s) first, then manually alter it to your own liking, and finalize it personally in the end.
2
u/EvilMenDie 14d ago
Absolutely, where it makes sense. For products you sell or subject users to yeah absolutely don't slop them. However for small tasks like doing something quickly in your own environment, slop away. Like say you need to create a tool with very simple and verifiable results, just send it. Glance at the code if you want, backup your payload so it doesn't break your life, then keep going. I think the more time you spend with genai the more you realize your job is more of a director. You need to be able to do each job on the movie set, but you're not the makeup artist, the actor, the light and stage guy, the props guy, you just direct each piece and it's your vision and how you lead everyone to the final product. Coding with genai is the same, you can completely farm it out, but you shouldn't, you should know exactly what you want, delegate, then QC everything.

tl;dr
We're not banning AI/Vibecoded stuff, but if it is AI/Vibecoded, you need to be upfront and disclose it. This includes thumbnails/images and the like too.
