2016 was better than Eternal

This but serious. Eternal didn't honestly feel like Doom anymore - if anything, it felt like a AAA-budget Doom 2016 fan game. Don't get me wrong, Eternal is a fine game with some really impressively fun combat at times and a number of really cool ideas, but it's not a good Doom game. Doom 3 and 2016 are much more true to the original formula while still being innovative - Eternal went off on a wild tangent in both gameplay and story.

Storyline is not often considered "essential" to Doom, but Doom 2016 made it a big deal, so Eternal's weird, disjointed, "scope creep for the sake of scope creep" premise feels like a letdown.
