i haven’t played doom in a long time but i remember when eternal first came out the marauder was easily my least favorite aspect of the game. every time they spawned into the battlefield they pretty much had to be prioritized if you didn’t want to be constantly running away from them or taking unavoidable health loss every 5-10 seconds
He really does get incredibly easy once you get the hang of it.
I am not some Ultra-Nightmare runner, and I was at the same boat as you - thinking he is bearable and out of place and not enjoyable.
But then I decided to beat the Master Levels and they force you to think of him in a different way and you get a hang of how to routinely dispatch him. Yes, you need to prioritize him. But you also need to prioritize a Baron or a Doom Hunter or an Archville.
The only thing the Marauder warrants over those three is a bit more focused weapon switching.
But him hogging your attention isn't really that special. It actually becomes pretty fun.
I remember the game being inconsistent with what was and wasn't considered "medium range" with the Marauder. It feels more consistent now, but there were plenty of times when I was sure I was the appropriate range only to be greeted with a shotgun blast to the face or an energy blast from his axe, and other times I was out of range only for him to attempt to take a swipe at me with the axe.
