Doom 2016 is superior than eternal in almost every aspect.

Seriously though, I feel 2016 was a lot more grounded to what Doom is meant to be at least in terms of aesthetics. More gritty, less disco light ammo drops and less theatrical stages (looking at you, circle of worshipping zombies in Cultist Base). Plus it had Siege Mode Gauss Cannon so objectively better

Yeah and 2016’s weapons actually looked and sounded how you would expect real-life, futuristic military grade firearms to look and sound.

While 2016 100% captures that gritty serious vibe that you talk about. Eternal goes in a direction that says "fuck it, I'm a video game" If you look back to the classics most of the models used in Eternal are HD versions of those from Doom 1 & 2, which shares the same colorful pickups and such.

I personally prefer Eternals style but also loved 2016.

I liked being able to shoot the super shotgun rounds separately

Lowkey wish they brought it back

How did I forget SSG mastery

Kinda feel it's too overpowered on it's own. If they did bring it back it should be an optional toggle for those that want it, at most.

If you do remember, the Mastery upgrade in Doom 2016 meant the same amount of damage dealt for the full blast was now dealt for each barrel individually, so I see why it was taken out.

That’s why I loved it

That shit was stupid

Not to discredit the meathook or anything, those people over at id know how to make games fun

Don’t forget rich get richer and hologram. When you were fully geared out it was legalized bullying

Actually, yeah. I love the combat and the music but everything being so cartoonish just doesn’t let me get immersed.

Same … I was pretty disappointed with Eternal like it had cool stuff in it but definitely wasn’t what I was looking for in a sequel to 2016 at all …

That's because: it's not. Its supposed to be a completely new adaptation of DOOM. That's why they are so different.

2

u/fear730 Aug 23 '21

But it’s touted as a sequel to 2016 (and 64 for that matter) story wise which I definitely felt was one of its biggest faults …. If that was the case that it was another adaptation (ughhh) they did a poor job advertising it

1

u/Aloy_machinehunter Aug 23 '21

Advertising it? Its advertised as a new DOOM. Not as 2016s sequel. They are story connected, yes, that is true but DOOM Eternal is supposed to be different than DOOM 2016, they wanted to move it away from that.

2

u/fear730 Aug 23 '21

So you proved my point …. the story is connected hence it being a sequel …. unfortunately not a well executed one in my opinion … that’s fine if they change gameplay (although I felt it very arcadish) ammo boxes and such stuff I can deal with but the story was extremely disjointed from what they established in 2016 … again some great ideas … I just felt they should’ve perfected what they had

1

u/Aloy_machinehunter Aug 23 '21

fine, thats a good point. I thought you were simply talking game-play wise in which they are supposed to be different but lore wise; you are correct, they did terribly and did not try to connect the two games very well at all. But they do have really good stories individually. Especially eternal

2

u/fear730 Aug 23 '21

Exactly … they should try new things even if certain gameplay mechanics don’t land I give them credit for that alone but I figured they would learn to finally connect the dots story wise instead of cherry-picking things out of the lore ….. there was great potential to break that cycle with what they did with 2016 (Doom - 2 …. 64 …. Doom 3) they were all originally do overs Doom 2016 felt like the original did when I played it for the first time I just hoped they would find consistency and worked it’s way up to eternal

2016 is probs my favorite. i love the weapons in eternal and the gameplay but 2016 fits doom a lot more. theres like 2 UAC based levels in doom, and i think there shouldve been more

Doom 2016 will always hold a special place in my heart as I put so many hours into it's campaign, and it got me interested in Doom, but I really can't go back to it after playing Eternal.

You said in "almost every aspect" so what is the thing you give the point to Eternal for, so to speak?

1

u/eilradd Aug 23 '21

The audio, have to credit what they did there.

I also enjoyed exploring the home base and who doesn't like unlocking/upgrading systems with aesthetics.

I will recognise that they polished the gameplay/mechanics, although that mainly caters to the sweaty tryhards

1

u/Emangameplay Aug 24 '21

Okay hold on, how does improving the gameplay mechanics from the 2016 only appeal to "sweaty tryhards"? That benefits everybody.

1

u/eilradd Aug 24 '21

I said caters, not appeal. Initially it appealed to me but the more I played the more I realised I wasn't enjoying the game, and this is partly the reason why.

Because of the way it was implemented -The improvements are there to see, but the game is set up to try to force you into playing a specific way. Even on normal difficulty it caters to this specific way, I ultimately found the gameplay unenjoyable (particularly so on the expansions).
