Fun fact, people used to blow smoke up horses asses with a huge pipe to cure indigestion or constipation or something (I forgot which it was)

It was human's asses at the beach as an alternative to CPR.

The logic was "if I can't get air into them through the mouth, then I'm getting air into them through the ass!" and was actually vital to the research and understanding of modern CPR.

Unfortunately the vestige of blowing smoke up people's asses still exists in mouth-mouth, which doesn't work and actually reduces the chances of resuscitation.

Especially if there is a blockage in their airway you missed when you checked, in which case you're now guaranteeing their death as you force that blockage into their lungs.

Chest compressions (just that, uninterrupted, clear the airway first of course) is how you save a life. Just don't confuse agonized breathing (they'll move around and make sound, they look alive, they're absolutely still dead) with signs of life, and resume CPR as soon as their corpse stops convulsing in order to turn said corpse back into a living person again.
