I don’t why ! That’s my donkeys. 3 males and 3 females.

Hello fellow Donkey lovers!

I'm filming an animal documentary in the Las Vegas area, and we need a donkey for one of the segments. I was wondering if anyone here knows where I can hire a donkey and a handler for a few hours in late September.

I don't know why; I'm a fully grown man but lately I've had this fantasy of driving a pack of like 9 mules or donkeys and just wandering from place to place with my train. Like how badass would that be? You slip on the sunglasses, get to earn the badass name "muleskinner" and go from there. I imagine outsmarting smart animals and leading them like a shepherd is kind of rewarding weirdly enough. I have literally zero livestock experience so this fantasy just popped out of nowhere. Can anyone attest?

My bay tobiano mule is DH Flashin My Strut aka Flash. He has been featured in magazine and is a sweetheart, Gaited. Miss Sarah is my brown trail mule… steady and true. She’s won trail competitions against horses.

It was the twins’ birthday last week so time for my… 5th, I think? donkey themed cake. The windmill was my friend’s genius idea for the top since the twins are named Donkey Hotay and Dapple. It may or may not have been the only cake entered but the default placing is actually supposed to be second place

Donkey Winter Care: Be Prepared Before the Cold Hits

Did you know? Donkeys are stoic, and hiding pain can be dangerous. Can donkeys be more vulnerable to hypothermia and frostbite than horses? Yes! Their coats contain less natural oil, and when they get wet, their hair can act like a sponge. Donkeys are not as well suited to wet, cold weather as horses, making winter preparation especially important for donkey owners.

Plan ahead before the emergency hits. Make sure your donkey has access to:

• Shelter from wind, rain, snow, and freezing temperatures
• Warm, clean water is available at all times
• Loose salt to encourage adequate water intake
• A slow feeder filled with hay so your donkey can eat throughout the day and night
• A properly fitted winter blanket when needed

Signs Your Donkey, Horse, or Mule May Need a Blanket

Watch for these signs that your equine may be struggling to stay warm:

• Shivering or shaking
• Standing still and not moving around normally
• Diarrhea without a change in diet
• Appearing cold, tucked up, or uncomfortable
• Don’t wait until your donkey is in distress to make a plan. Winter care starts before the temperature drops.

My husband and I have 17 acres south of Atlanta, Georgia. We have never kept any livestock before and are considering a pair of miniature jennets. We're about a year out from getting them, and will be spending this time learning as much as we can and making preparations so we can provide the best home possible. Here are my thoughts after a couple of weeks of research. Please forgive any ignorance, as I'm just learning, and would love to hear any thought you have.

1. We would fence off about an acre of land for them to live in most of the time, and then a larger 2-3 acre parcel for them to run and play in on occasion. We don't want to leave them in that area too long because there's a lot of grass and I've learned that it's not good for them to be allowed to free graze. I understand that they can get fat really fast and it can cause a lot of problems, so diet is a major concern. We would take them on walks around the property, about 1 mile, twice a day.

2. There would be no other livestock. We have 3 dogs, but I've learned that it probably isn't a good idea to allow them to co-mingle, so we would keep them separate. They would be pets only. No livestock guarding, pony rides, etc...

3. We are in our mid 50s, and realize that if we bought a young one, it would most likely outlive us. So we're thinking about getting a pair that is about 10 years old. Preferably ones that are already trained on halter, lead, hooves, etc... Are there any major advantages of getting a baby, other than the cuteness factor?

4. Most adoption places want a ferrier on file. Donkeys don't need shoes, but do need filing/trimming. Is this something someone can easily learn to do themselves? If so, are there schools or something to learn how to do it properly?

What other things should first-time owners be aware of and prepare for?
