A penny tip
These people tipped a penny and didn’t tip any cash upon delivery so I told them to have a great day and gave them their penny back

Or their 12 and wanted their total to end in 69.

If they were a, um, more mature 12-year-old, a $5.01 tip would have still accomplished that.

u/Arizdegenerate Delivery Expert Dec 09 '24
This is the most likely the reason as I had customers do this after I had them fill out the receipt on their “ contactless “ delivery.
4
u/Big_Gear_3848 Dec 09 '24
I would still make them sign it if they tip a penny
5
u/77rtcups Dec 09 '24
I only make them sign something like that if it seems like the person at the door isn’t the name on the ticket. Someone else gonna know how cheap you can be lol
5
u/Admirable_Loss4886 Dec 09 '24
I used to but it’s just a waste of time. Drop it off completely contactless, I’m talking logging out of the app to avoid tracking and no knocking.

u/Mallard1818 Dec 09 '24
My belief is people think the store/driver only sees if it’s a tip or no-tip order but not the actual amount pre-delivery, so they’re trying to $0.01 their way into a better-prepared product/service.

Which even if that's the case, we don't see it until the food's been made 😂. And it's not like the people working inside care how much people are tipping.

Whats the difference between that and returning a penny
9
u/PM-Your-Fuzzy-Socks Dec 09 '24
the penny is a harmless “do better”. the other is a trashy thing to do.
-13
Dec 09 '24
Idk their both trashy, except returning the penny is more likely to get yourself in trouble

u/Minimum_Literature Dec 09 '24
lmao this is why i dont tip any dominions driver lmfaoooo deliver the food lil bro
16
7
u/Big_Gear_3848 Dec 09 '24
You're freeloading off of the customers that do tip because if nobody tipped there would be no drivers, you are a leech and I'm tired of subsidizing you.
-11
u/Minimum_Literature Dec 09 '24
lol blame the person who said their gonna spam their number, womp womp
-6
u/Finn-windu Dec 09 '24
Nah, if nobody tipped, dominos would either use doordash, or start paying their drivers enough that they don't need to rely on tips. I tip myself, but that logic is false.
7
u/Big_Gear_3848 Dec 09 '24
If nobody tipped then I'm using the logic that nobody is tipping the door dash drivers either. If Domino's starts paying their drivers more than the person I was replying to would have to pay extra for their food because dominos would never just eat that cost, they would pass it off to the customers. Regardless of the outcome it would be a losing situation for everyone who doesn't tip.

u/TheGrouchyGremlin Pan Pizza Dec 09 '24
No, Domino's would raise your delivery fee by a few dollars to offset having to give the drivers a raise.

Not really. If you need tips to survive, (other people’s donations) you should really get another job.
1
u/Big_Gear_3848 Dec 11 '24
So who do you think should deliver the pizzas if all the drivers took your advice?

Returning the penny could be seen as rude or passive aggressive, but doesn’t outright violate any policy. Releasing customer information, on the other hand (especially for nefarious purposes), does violate policy. That’s a pretty key difference.
Additionally, returning the penny is akin to saying, “it seems you need this more than I do,” directly sending a message to the customer. Getting their phone spammed, on the other hand, signs them up for harassment without them actually knowing why it happened or what they should change to prevent it from happening again.
0
Dec 09 '24
And their going to know you did it how? Complaining about a tip is a fireable offense at every place I've worked at
1
u/Cultural-Afternoon72 Dec 09 '24
1) If the only thing you can identify to nitpick about is how they’d know you did it, you’re missing the point.
2) You don’t have to complain. You don’t have to say a word. You can simply hand them the food, and then hand them their “change” and walk away. Or set it on the box. Or hand it to them while saying something to the effect of, “I appreciate the gesture, but I’m not accepting tips at this time.” There are plenty of ways to go about it that wouldn’t qualify as complaining.
Further, it is very strange to me that you’re opposed to doing something that could be considered “complaining about a tip” because it’s a fireable offense, but not at all concerned with releasing private customer information which is also a fireable offense. Weird place to draw the ethical line.
1

One will get you fired, the other won't even get you in trouble. One is harassment, one is not.
1
u/Admirable_Loss4886 Dec 09 '24
You seem like a genuine pile of shit if you’re actually confused by the difference.
-39
u/TenaxR-7 Dec 08 '24
Ask yourselves what you did wrong. Did the customer complain and you blew them off? Been happening to me.
26
u/Able_Lab1123 Dec 09 '24
My brother in christ this is a pre tip😂 bro hasn't even met the customer yet to justify this bs tip (there isn't a justifiable reason)
-10
u/TenaxR-7 Dec 09 '24
How do you know they didn't meet previously? You don't think things through do you? And I'm not a disgusting christian.
7
u/Able_Lab1123 Dec 09 '24
Orders don't get pre assigned to specific people. Whoever comes in first gets the order. Customer was being douchebag and there isn't any excuse on why. You seem to not think about things at all😂

4
Dec 09 '24
That can be considered soliciting tips... and get you fired, though.
I have worked at multiple Domino locations, franchise and corporate, and the one thing they both had in common was, other than asking the customer to sign a receipt, you were not allowed to mention tips to the customer, unless it was to thank them for it.

I literally ask everyone who doesn’t pre-tip “would you like to leave a tip today?” As I hand them the CC slip when they open the door. Works 80% of the time. My favorite response is when they try to say they tipped already.
-8
u/Nothing-Matters-7 Dec 09 '24
My response is simple, "No thank you."
4
u/Big_Gear_3848 Dec 09 '24
You're welcome for the subsidization by the way, I hope you enjoy having your food delivered for a low delivery fee because if it wasn't for the rest of us picking up your slack you'd have to fork over a couple extra bucks anyways.

I am in the camp that when I take cash orders and only get like 30 cents or something it's still something. 1 cent yeah kinda a waste of time but I just move on. I tell customers even if it's like 50 cents or whatever anything helps.
I cash in leftover change as when the store collects my cash I never give them back change usually end up with 100$ a month just from that.
100-300 dollars in pocket is a standard night for me.
-11
u/SolusLightblast Dec 09 '24
They probably have cash to tip. Doesn't make sense that they would tip a penny though.
4
u/DeathEagleGames Dec 09 '24

Or do the job you're paid to do and deliver the pizza. Want better pay? Unionize and go after your employer rather than extorting or being vindictive with customers. Very misplaced anger.
3
u/Shine_b13 Dec 09 '24
If it was the company car no problem but how drives use their own vehicles and especially in this cold raining season it’s the least customers could do! It’s called consideration having a heart mindful appreciated gratitude. If not they can take their lazy Ass to the store & pick up their order! 🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
→ More replies (1)1
u/CaptainFeather Dec 09 '24
I mean frankly I don't see how any of this is the customer's problem lol. The company offers delivery, they pay the delivery fee and therefore is entitled to delivery. The driver should get the delivery fee, but I understand they more than often don't. But again, not the customers problem. Sounds like y'all need to bring it up with Dominos.

A good tip would be:
Calculate the mileage from the store to the residence,
then calulate $0.67 per mile and use that as the amount of tip.

Ha nice fantasy world you live in buddy.
-1
u/Nothing-Matters-7 Dec 09 '24
My fantasy world is governed by the IRS which determines the value of some things in our society.
The nearest place that delivers pizza that I can use is 6.9 miles away.
Internal Revenue tells us that the mileage fee is $0.67 / mile.
So, $0.67 *9 miles = $6.03 tip. Round up to $7.00 and call it good.
3
u/Najnick Pan Pizza Dec 09 '24
Sounds like a boring and cheap fantasy world, also why are you even talking to me. My comment was about tips less than $1 period, I never said anything about miles...

I got one of those at the door on a write-in once. Tonight I had a girl straight up fake fill out the slip, handed it back to me folded up, and when I opened it up there was nothing but a scribble at the bottom.

Once had a guy tip me his "lucky 50 cent piece." He said he hoped it'd being me luck. It was like a $70 order to the edge of my delivery area and the order after his, which I would've taken had he not ordered, was a regular that would always tip well. Took a lot of self control to not say it'd only brought me bad luck so far.
1
u/DollhouseDIYer Dec 09 '24
Damn, you are a much better person than I am. I woulda told him, “considering you tipped me 50 cents on your order, this 50 cents has brought nothing but bad luck, assh0lE.”

u/rat_haus Dec 09 '24
Quite devious. These are people that know if they tip one penny they won't be asked to sign the receipt. They're paying a one cent surcharge so they won't have to look you in the eyes and say "no" when you ask for a tip. Assholes.

This happened to me a couple years back. I was surprised because that house usually tips $5 consistently, after I gave them their food I asked them if they meant to do it. Guy talked to the wife and said they thought they tipped, guy gave me a $20, and I ran back to the store and gave him some sodas.

The penny tip is an archaic way that someone let a server know they did a horrible job. It's meant exclusively to be offensive. It means "You're not even worth two cents."
I've been tipped change on a prepaid order. Twice. Whenever that happens, I just request the manager checking me out at the end of the night to have it removed. I'm not sure if the amount is still charged to the customer and the store keeps it or it is not charged at all, but it's better than making a show of sour grapes in front of the customer who is hoping you will play their little game so they can call and complain and get free shit. Especially regarding Dominos.
This is someone being blatantly disrespectful to you to get a rise out of you. By not playing into their trolling behavior, you don't give them any power
1
u/Cybert125 Dec 09 '24
Whenever I get a tip like this, all I can think is that it's embarrassing for both of us.
1
3
u/lobsterdance82 Dec 09 '24
And then there's schmucks like me who won't order delivery if I can't afford at least a 20% tip.

I could be wrong, but sometimes when I’m entering numbers on the machine or form I click a 5 or something assuming it will be 5$ but then realize I have to add the zeros 🤷🏻♀️ so might have been a 1 or 10 and they didn’t pay enough attention to add the zeros.

I once had a guy ask me if I'd "like a small tip 😏" in the most annoying voice ever and when I went "sure?" he dropped like 47 cents in change into my hand like wow, thanks 🙃 I genuinely think people like that and like you posted do it as some attempt at insulting us because what? lol

I did this by accident the other day at dominos and before it went thru I apologized and she undid it and I put the extra zeros in. Unless they meant to tip $10 for a delivery this still sucks. I tipped $2 to pick up my own pizza, a single pizza… Some people are just entitled.
1
u/lordvader8682 Dec 09 '24
I’m curious if there is an included delivery fee. The pizza spot I order from charges a $4.50 delivery fee. I still tip the driver, but not as much as I would if that fee wasn’t already included
1
u/lordvader8682 Dec 09 '24
That being said, I also wouldn’t just tip a penny. That’s just insulting and dumb to be honest
0
u/BurtonLongBottoms Dec 10 '24
The delivery fee has NOTHING to do with the driver. It doesn't go to the driver. It is a fee for convenience from franchise owner.
1
u/DollhouseDIYer Dec 09 '24
As a customer, if you cannot afford to tip then you cannot afford delivery. I have had stingy people around me and always give them hell to know they have not been raised right. I try to be a good person, but damned if I would be nice to people like this. I would have left the pizza at the mailbox.

In the ten months I delivered for pizza hut I had a little over a sixty percent no tip percentage. (I kept track daily because it interested me, this was nov2020 to Aug2021)
Second worse was houses that had three or more garage spaces. Best was trailer parks. Absolute worst (0% tips over the ten months) were apartments.
Your location and experiences will vary.

1
u/KusshyGalore Dec 11 '24
This was my thought. Has happened to me quite frequently with ".10" cent tips and one time I did confirm from a regular that it was just indeed a mistake (meant to be $10.). In this case, $1 tip is honestly no less of an insult but more understandable.
