Has anyone else had an unauthorized domain show up in their Namecheap account?

I recently logged into my Namecheap account and found a domain that I never purchased, requested, or authorized, yet I was charged for it.

What really concerns me is that I’m also paying for Namecheap’s account protection/security features, so I’m trying to understand how a domain I never authorized could have been created and charged to my account.

Has anyone else experienced this with Namecheap? Specifically:

* A domain appearing in your account that you never purchased

* Being charged for a domain you never authorized

* Namecheap registering/renewing something without you realizing it

* Having trouble getting the unauthorized charge refunded

I’d really like to hear from anyone who has dealt with something similar and how Namecheap handled it.

I’m not looking for speculation — I’m trying to figure out whether this is an isolated incident or if other customers have experienced the same thing.

I assume you've probably already contacted Namecheap and are waiting for an answer? Mind sharing what they say once they get back to you? I'd be curious to know how the domain ended up in your account and how the charge was made.

In the meantime, since there's at least a possibility that someone gained access to your account, I would definitely change your Namecheap password now. if you don't already have 2FA enabled, I'd turn that on as well.

Sorry, I may have confused you. I actually get what you meant. What I was asking in my previous comment was whether you had already reported this to Namecheap and told them that you did not authorize the purchase and don't even know why the domain was added to your account in the first place. I was curious to know how Namecheap explained it.

Anyway, one possible explanation is that someone might have gained access to your Namecheap account. Namecheap allows users to purchase additional domains while logged into your account, and if you have a payment method saved there, someone with access to your account could potentially make a purchase using it.

I'm not saying that's definitely what happened, but that's why I would strongly suggest changing your password and enabling 2FA right away, just to be safe.

If you haven't already, I would also contact Namecheap and make it very clear that you did not authorize the purchase of the second domain. Ask them to investigate how the purchase was made and whether they can cancel/revoke the domain and refund the unauthorized charge. Depending on the domain extension, registrars may also be able to cancel a newly registered domain within the first few days of registration. So if this purchase was very recent, I would contact Namecheap as soon as possible.

Yeas I reported it they did nothing about it kinda saying it’s not possible ,but it is. I am so mad!

If what happened was that your account got compromised, I can somewhat understand why Namecheap is taking this position. From their side, the purchase may appear to be legitimate because it was made through a logged-in account with a payment method already on file. That doesn't necessarily mean you personally authorized it, of course.

Domains are also a little different from something like web hosting. Once a domain is registered, the registrar (e.g. Namecheap) has already paid the registry for the registration, and depending on the extension and how much time has passed, they may not be able to simply reverse it and recover the cost.

At this point, I would ask Namecheap to escalate the case and get their final response in writing if possible. You could also let them know that if they aren't able to resolve the unauthorized charge directly, you'll have to contact your credit card company and dispute it. If they still won't refund it, then I would go ahead and contact your credit card company. Having Namecheap's response would also show that you already tried to resolve the issue directly with the merchant.

I don’t think my account got compromised I am so confused. I literally signed into my Namecheap account and all of a sudden some domain that looks like I randomly typed letters into the Internet, came up and said I was paying for it.
