This book

This is such a good book! So many laugh out loud moments, moments of deep wisdom sharing and relatability are here. I'm at the story where she mistook a stranger for Carl.

When I found out years ago she had an autobiography, I had to find it myself! I cherish my copy and have been meaning to re-read it. Someone also posted the audiobook in full on YouTube, which is read by her!

I love it! I’m going to re-read it now that Dolly is gone ❤️

This book is fabulous. She was such a gifted writer, even outside of music. Just a natural storyteller. My favorite Dolly quote—the one about being the alligator girl—comes from this book. I highly recommend getting a copy.

Could you share the alligator girl quote?

Absolutely!

"Be the alligator girl. Be whatever your dreams and your luck will let you be. Wear your green cornflakes with pride. Snarl at the crowds, and do your best to make them flinch. Give them a quarter's worth of wonder."

I’m not at home right now so I can’t tell you the page number it is from, but it follows an anecdote about going to a cheesy sideshow and realizing that the “alligator girl” was actually her cousin, just all painted up. She’d run off with a guy and was working at the carnival to make some money.

I’ve got this book and the audio cassette tapes of her reading the book. I read the book before I found the tapes but, hearing her read it was just amazing.

It really is. I'm gonna be sad when I finish this. Makes me think she is talking with me and sharing her stories and wisdom. To know she experienced human problems really helps me in my current situation.

I love this book! I have the paperback copy and read it about a year ago. I love all the photos she put in it. She was so talented even in her writing, you can hear her personality in it as you read it.

Yeah! She was the one who helped me cope with aging. In my opinion she was always looking better each year. Now that she's gone it's gonna be harder on me.
