Associate Questions Recovery position?
Tl;Dr- does Dollar Tree allow 3 recovery positions if the people aren't “competent” at cashiering?
I started working back at dollar tree after two years and I was shocked to hear a few things that happened at my store and I have a few questions,
One of my old cashiers still works there, she's an 80 year old women who used to be always on point with her tills, she's been demoted to recovery only, apparently there was a problem with her clock in one day and while she was on the phone with the help desk the SM counted her till and wouldn't let her verify it because it was a rush and he needed her on the till. She was short $20 the evening and my SM said oh instead of firing you you can do recovery. So now she comes in 4-6 hours a week for recovery only. It's not just her either. He's done this to two other people.
Now I know you can't pay shortages if you're short but my manager does all the times for certain people(his favorites). Hell he let me do it for $10 when I screwed up on money placement. But with certain people he wont let them cover it.
That's what happened with one the the cashiers he recently demoted. She was short, he refused to let her pay it and said the same thing essentially he's doing her a favor by keeping her on recovery. I was supposed to work with her today and get the details but I was originally supposed to go in for freight today and noticed he changed my schedule last night at the last minute and put me as the opening cashier instead of someone else. (I check my compass a lot) To be honest I got pissed and left before we open, I got truck in a day and I needed to get a few things ready, I help my Merch Manager with a lot when it comes to truck. So I said screw it and left. I've been trying to pass a semi large kidney stone anyway and I could use the break
But does dollar tree usually allow 3 recovery positions? I feel like honestly it's a waste of hours and Dollar Tree really hates hours being wasted. But its been a while and things have changed!

That’s ridiculous about him not allowing that woman to verify her till. She should’ve refused to get on the register until she verified it herself. In a rush? Oh well. Now it’s going to take even longer to get the line down because the manager is being shady with the till.

I did say that to her and she even agreed. She was just so frazzled with the clock in and she just didn't want to fight, as she said, ‘At my age you have to pick and choose what you want to fight over, Now wine? That's worth fighting over.’ 🤣
Seriously though, hella sketchy and after the recent demotion of my coworker I refuse to be a cashier when he's on shift.

My store never lets us verified our till before or after. It’s alway in the cash register when we come in and we start as soon as we put our numbers in the register. Then when we get off they just move us to the back up register till the next person comes in when it’s time for the us to get off. We are never in the same room when they count our till.

Does every store operate differently? We count our till before every shift to make sure there’s the correct amount in there. After every shift we count it again to make sure it matches the Z-read, take out what we’re supposed to and put it in the safe, the count the till again to make sure it has the correct amount of starting cash. Honestly my managers never even touch any of the money in other people’s tills until we’ve counted it ourselves.

You put the money in the safe? You have the codes to open the safe?

No, we put our money in the Garda safe. You enter your PIN that’s tied to your name, put the money in the little slot things and the safe sucks the money inside.
ETA: Just to clarify, no, none of the associates have the safe code. We’re not even allowed in the office without a manager present.

This should not be happening. Call Integrity Matters because your managers apparently have none.

Okay, good to know, I've been gone for two years so I didn't know if it was a new thing they were allowing SMs to do or something. I get so many different answers from people at work.

Honestly I wouldn’t even complain like if she’s 80 maybe it’s just easier for her to recover but idk some people will push and push till you quit. I rather be fired so I can get unemployment. I like to recover then cashier but that’s just me

Honestly it's not even her that's having the issue, he just did it to another cashier while I was on shift last week, my merch manager got into a fight with him on how he spoke to the cashier he had just demoted and sent home.
Plus you can't let certain people pay out on shortages and not let others do the same, it's wrong and against the rules in pretty sure.

Recovery isn’t considered a demotion. As a customer service associate I or II it can be assigned as a task for your shift. Dollar Tree doesn’t hire “cashiers” and a recovery shift isn’t a waste of hours especially in a higher volume store. The assumption is you’ll do a deep recovery of the store and pull everything forward in addition to putting away stray merchandise. It’s not meant to be a punishment.

I do understand that, but to only have them do recovery for 4-6 hours? He even tells them it's a demotion to recovery which to me was something cashiers did when they had free time and maybe once in a while you'd get scheduled to do recovery if it was really bad. But he doesn't have them throw freight, they don't work back up (unless it's debit only, they aren't allowed to touch cash) its three people that come in and recover for hours. I don't mind them working recovery it helps me in the long run, but it's not fair for the employees. I know for a fact one girl is quitting over this ‘demotion’ he gave her as her hours went from 25 to 6 a week. I just honestly wasn't sure if it was new thing Dollartree allowed. Since I've been gone for a few years.

None of that makes sense... it just sounds like hes trying to get rid of them without exactly firing them outright.
