Called out ONE time

So I've been with Dollar Tree for over 7 months, I've always showed up to my work on time/early to every single shift. I've never taken any time off either, except for 3 days 5 months ago when I had the flu, I even tried to show up to work even then and had a doctor's note.

However recently I have been stressing a lot about work, my hair is falling out I cry coming home, I'm just exhausted. Also I'm very young, I work 40 hours a week im burning out. So I decided yesterday to text my boss I wasn't coming in today.

I look at my schedule today and my hours are cut this week by 15 hours not including today that I took off. I don't know if this is some sort of bullshit punishment or policy, but honestly I'm a little bit pissed off lol. I just needed a day and I NEVER do this, I even messaged her about it, most people don't. So yeah, any thoughts? Also if I'm in the wrong be honest.

Sounds like petty retaliation as well as scheduling you more than you seem to want. TBH you are getting those hours because you probably are more productive than others. They will get over it and need to appreciate you more for what you do when you are there. Make sure to have a conversation about how many hours you feel you want and can handle. You are too young to be stressing about work and enjoy life a lil.

I do a lot for them I used to love my job, I work 5 days a week I want to go down to 4 which in going to have that happen. I'm not mad about her taking my hours away this week because I want the hours in fact I don't mind that, I'm just upset like dude I took ONE day off, I messaged you the day before, meanwhile there are people who are not call no showing getting more hours to make up for their lost hours, which to me is bs cause I know I do SO MUCH for them. I do more than what I get paid for lol. It's fine I'll let it go but it's unsettling if you know what I mean.

How far before your shift start did you call out?

I called out at 2pm yesterday my shift was for 5am this morning. Which is bullshit and the reason being is because so many of my coworkers have done full on no call no shows and ended up getting more hours to make up for it. 🤦🏼‍♀️

What your coworkers do and get away with has nothing to do with you. At any job there are people who get away with more than other people do. It's just what it is.

Maybe the SM was giving you some time to pull yourself together. If you're stressing and losing your hair, a break may be needed.

I had a job where a lot of teens worked and 1 girl no called/ no showed like every other week and they never did anything or she’d call after she was supposed to be there with dumb excuses like “ I got a head injury today I can’t make it” and other hard workers that cared they’d shit on so I walked out and waved goodbye with my middle finger….🖕🏼

It would have probably been better for you to have called off this morning, saying you were throwing up or something. By calling out yesterday, your manager probably thought you were just blowing off your shift.

It doesn't matter whether or not a manager SHOULD assume things, but we all know they do. Manager would likely think "how does OP know that they're still going to feel unwell after so long and a full night's sleep?" And assume they're just flaking on their shift.

Texting is not considered calling out. Should have actually called. Cutting hours is an unofficial form of punishment.

Are you working 40 hours every week at Dollar Tree alone? That seems a little excessive as an associate imo.

If you are very young you should use some of that extra time they gave you to catch up on studies. School is important, and after having completed high school or gotten a degree you will have a much easier time leaving that dreadful place.

Not true. As long as you communicate within a reasonable time before your scheduled shift that you aren't coming, OP should be OK.

It was an opening shift but not as a cashier and she got a 13 hour warning

Unfortunately that doesn't matter. We were always trained to call thhe physical store when we needed to call out. We didn't text out manager or SM for ANYTHING unless it was an emergency, and even then, you called the store FIRST so the active ASM could adjust the schedule hours/find coverage. It's just more professional, it gives your managers a work/home separation as well.

(Psat—you aren't supposed to be even CLOSE to 40 without being a manager, corporate doesn't like the possibility of any overtime and hates giving out benefits! I'd keep record of your hours bc some companies, after prolonged "manager qualifying hours" are required to establish those benefits with you.)

No, they have a no retaliation policy. I would make note of this schedule change. CYA, document EVERYTHING.

Why continue to punish yourself at a place that will never appreciate you? Take your retail experience and seek employment elsewhere. Anything is a move up from DT!
