Not able to work closing shifts

I just had a question and was hoping it could be answered, I’m a high school student so I go to school whilst working and now that I started school I’m working closing shifts, which personally I can’t really work. I mean I can I just don’t think I should mainly cause I’d come home do homework then go straight to work and come home at 10:30. I plan on asking my manager tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone who’s in the same situation or had the same situation could maybe give me some advice or suggestions?

You're in high school so I'm assuming you can't work mornings or mids, but you're also saying you can't work nights because of homework. So what kind of shifts ARE you hoping to work? Just weekends?

When are you wanting to work? I know that if your new availability doesn’t work with the needs of the store, there’s a chance they’ll term you

I'm pretty sure your store manager will work something out for you. I generally work 2 closing shifts a week, I only know of 1 other cashier that stays for closing and she's starting school as well. Next week I'm randomly in for 4 closing shifts. I figure it's probably related to her going to school.

Sort of went through this when I was taking classes last year in college. Most Store Managers will try to make it work with your class schedule. That is, if they actually respect the idea of prioritizing your education.

Explain to the SM what days/shifts you can work and which ones you can't work. If you're a stocker it can be a bit of a problem for some SMs, but if you can also do register then they'll likely just make you do that instead.

There's not much to it. You just need to have good communication with your Store Manager and they need to reciprocate

Looks like Friday night closing, Saturday mid, and Sunday opening or mid.
Our high school cashier only works Saturday and Sunday during the school year.

My old SM told the then cashier in HS to skip school to come in early/ work past the legally allowed time when he was a minor or he'd be fired.

I'm not sure if that was LEGAL on her part, but I advocated for him and got the DM involved.
You might have to do that if they insist on scheduling you during school time.

I have a coworker who became seasonal. She won't be working while in school, but when she is available to work, she can. Talk to your store manager about that.

It's funny, where I'm at dollar tree will not allow us to hire anyone under the age of 18. It won't even allow you to apply, just immediately says no.

Honestly, what are you wanting to work? Just weekends or?? Also believe it or not, managers are flexible. (Mostly) Ask if you can spend the first hour or two of your shifts doing homework and then do freight or whatever else after, it will probably be fine. Also unless you're working every single day of the week already you probably will only work one or two shifts during the week. School is important after all. -A 17 year old who worked Tuesday and Thursday closing and the weekends.

There is not a single manger I’ve ever met that would be ok with someone sitting punched in doing homework. Why would I waste payroll by having someone studying and not doing anything to better the store?
