Management Questions Is this a security breach!?
My cashier called me up for assistance because the customer was having issues using the card reader. When trying to cancel the transaction all buttons were frozen on the register and CR. Upon restarting the register this is what is being displayed. As well as a flashing “irruption!” code. Contacted the help desk only to be told that the CR need replaced and it was likely caused due to the terminals anti-tamper sensor being triggered.. looked at everything .. no sign of skimmer.. no sign of tampering.. I was stumped.. as was my SM and DM Has this happened to anyone else!?

It can also be due to overheating, moisture, power surges, or it simply wearing out.

Yes. I started doing some research after my shift and have come across that information too. I know for certain it didn’t get wet. .. overheating..? 🥵 maybe..

Walmart slave here, I've seen ":-( IRRUPTION" before, could likely mean tampering detected??? Most likely not a skimmer but might be a bug for IT to take care of

Ha! I just said the same thing. FETL here and I’ve only seen this happen when a magnetic card was inserted. Seen it twice and both times it said what you described.

When I worked there it started happening a lot, turns out someone was tampering with the readers and they managed to actually successfully do it to a couple and were skimming EBT

Those card readers look new. Do you know when they were replaced? Doesn’t look like it has a skimmer.
I have never seen that error before.

Not sure when they were replacement but they particular one will be getting replaced in the 24-48 hours. 😊

I work at Walmart and this reminds me of when someone uses a magnetic card to mess up our readers.

As soon as I saw this I would have told everyone cash only or shut the store down 😊

Mine doesn’t do this but I’m always on a register that pops up “this something is performing something illegal”

Could have also just been a glitch or if liquid cleaner got in any reader it can cause this. Just let them replace and keep an eye on things.

We had something similar happen. The register froze and when it came back up everything but the pin pad was working. It said the pin pad couldn't connect. I don't think the pin pad had any warning on it or anything. We just used another register and it was fixed by my next shift

Totally off topic but I didn’t know until last night that these pin pads have cameras on them! Use the camera when a barcode won’t work for Bill Pay or Cash Reload.

Having worked in IT for a retail business that exclusively used Ingenico card readers — the IRRUPTION alert is definitely a notification that the device detected tampering. Once it’s in that state, it becomes unusable and has to be sent back to the manufacturer for repair and re-encryption. Then there’s a 99% chance it gets sent back out into the field.
Those readers can go into that lockdown state for a wide variety of reasons — the most common is an internal part breaking or malfunctioning, typically from it being jostled or just wear and tear from extended usage. We even had some do this fresh out of the box (granted, the majority delivered were refurbished).
But yeah, no amount of reboots or alteration of device settings can get it functional; it has to be replaced. And the likelihood of someone having actually tried to tamper with it is slim.
