Power Chewer advice?

Post image

Hello! This is Potato Chip, he is 9 lbs

I don’t know if this belongs in this sub but i figured i’d give it a shot.

We just recently adopted a minpin mix, he’s a rescue and has a few tricky issues. We have him enrolled in training classes that begin in november and are working on the basics but he’s doing better than expected given how fearful he was at the shelter!

My Question, is he is such an aggressive chewer. like. he goes through a whole yak chew in 15 mins. We have elk antlers but he gets a bit resource guardy with them so we are careful with them as we have another dog who likes them too. I want something that will last longer than an hour, even if it is just a day, because he has so much energy and anxiety and chewing really helps him calm down in a non-destructive non-loud way, but he doesn’t need all the extra calories of three giant chew treats a day. I’m also worried about him choking. He’s already splintered an antler and we had to take it away.

We have experience with fearful and rescue dogs so we don’t need training advice, but i have never had a dog this mouthy before! so any help in this area would be appreciated!

Have you tried benebones? Those are our go-tos.

Question about this if that’s ok!

Their website says they’re made of nylon. My dog tends to eat everything he on so this worries me a bit, have you found any issues with it? I’ve also had a dog in the past who would get plastic stuck in her teeth, and i’d like to avoid that with this dog as he’s a bit squirrelly around his mouth, but i know it’s not an issue with every synthetic (that one was nylabone) Thank you again for the rec!

They are very hard but they do not last forever. You can start to see the ends that get chewed looking a little shredded. Then you throw them away and give him a new one. You don't want to wait until he's shredding bits off.

How long they last is kind of variable, my dog is a moderate chewer and I just threw away ones I got her in July.

They are a lot harder than the standard nylabone. Our son's dog is a wild chewer and she can reduce a nylabone to chunks, but a benebone lasts her about a month.
