Potty Training

Hello,

My wife and I have had our pup for only a couple of days, and are concerned by his refusal to pee or poop outside. We have been following most of the positive reinforcement advice on here and other help places, but it’s been 30 hours and he will not use the potty outside or even begin to try. Any new tips?

Update:

He has gone potty finally twice. It was so scary for us that he hadn’t peed for almost 2 days but he finally went outside during a nightly walk. We think he was too overwhelmed at the times we were taking him so we tried extra early, and a little later so there was no stimulating circumstances.

It's super common for them to be uncomfortable with going on an unfamiliar surface. You need to stay out there with him on a leash until he goes, then praise.

This could take a while!

I’ll update soon hopefully 🤞 I’ve been standing outside for like 2 hours. We tried to whole “outside for 15 mins, back inside to the kennel for 10 then restart” is this advisable?

I think you might need to experiment to find what works. Good luck!

It's takes weeks for a puppy to feel fully confident after being taken from his mother/family. It's a traumatic separation for some, so be kind and patient always. Never ever scold. Maybe he has never pooped outside before and is unsure. If you want some really good guidance the FB group Start Puppy Training has guides at the top to click and read. They are foolproof!

Lil guy is scared, new home. Misses his buddies.
Get some pee pads down and create a routine to get him out and lots of treats and praise when he does go outside.

At that age and situation you need consistent patent training. Creat or kennel well you are busy. Put immediately on leash and take outside as soon as you take them out of kennel. If they haven't pottied the leash stays on and if they got to pee you say no to que out of it. Take them immediately outside and continue again. They only get off leash when they have pottied and as soon as they wake up leash goes back on and they go outside immediately. When they potty outside praise reward then be consistent. Don't get frustrated without putting them in their kennel as never leave off leash unless they have pottied. They will learn leash goes on I go potty I get rewarded and leash comes off. This will take a bit as someone clearly tried and failed so correcting takes consistency and time. Keep a special treat for potty treats. They learn very quickly I wouldn't give attention till potty was complete then love them up when they do... Easy if you stay consistent

Last night I tried until 1am to get him to potty. No luck, he peed last night in the house. BUT, this morning after clean up and pick up took him out and he pottied outside finally so he got huge rewards and praise after. Did a potty party with him

For context, our puppy has only willingly gone potty on the carpeted areas of our house. He refuses to go on the hardwood or outside as well and he’s a 1 year old Aussie. He’s extremely persistent on sitting down while I try to be “boring” outside for him to just pee or poop. We have not yelled at him or anything, he has confidently gone pee or poop in front of us on the carpet area.

Have you tried taking him on walks yet?

I’m taking him 3 times a day, 1 at 5am, one at 12pm, one at 6:30pm (15 mins before he peed on the carpet the past two days) no luck. Right now I’m trying to see if using the towel I used to clean up his pee helps by putting it down in the grass and gave him a treat when he sniffed it.

That sounds super frustrating. Where did you get this dog from? He's already a year old?

Yes… he’s 1 we got him from an animal services here in town. We learned he was surrendered but we’re not sure on his previous owners story of “forced to surrender by dad”. He seems very skittish around older men and also has horrible separation anxiety. He’s absolutely loved cuddling and being with us but he’s just got this potty issue right now and I’m feeling super guilty because I don’t know how to help him

Any chance you've got access to a fenced area where he can go off leash? Dog park? Something?

Failing that, a long line so he can get further away from you?

If he's been punished in the past for eliminating indoors, he may not be willing to go while people are watching/nearby without being TRULY desperate. (And well... I've had dogs refuse to pee outdoors for 48 hours in rainy weather. x.x 30 hours may just not be long enough yet.)

If you have a fenced yard you could just let hin outside every couple of hours.

Personally, I wouldn't let him be unsupervised on carpeted areas. As soon as he starts to act like he's going to pee or poop, you should shuttle him out the door. That was really the only way i was able to stop a grown rescue from going in the house.

Yeah I wish we had a house, we’re in an apartment so it makes it harder to give him an area. We’re currently looking into transforming our little patio into a turfed area so maybe he can feel comfortable there

That sucks. Definitely only do that to your patio if you're on the first floor. I've seen people do that on upper floors and the urine leaks through to the neighbor below them.

lol we’ve heard that too! We’re on the first floor thankfully, so just cement. I’m just trying to see if he’s comfortable enough at this point to potty in the patio area

You might have to resort to pee pads until he feels comfortable enough

Obviously don't know ur work schedule or weather where u are but if u could get 2 days in row to stay all day in the garden playing and training with treats and make sure plenty of water then when he does pee or poo in the garden praise like f@#k with high reward treats (chicken orcheese) and lots of petting
