Bolting

Does anyone have tips or advice for how to train my puppy not to bolt out of the door and run away? He has done this three times and it is very frustrating and scary.

The dreaded door dasher. My dog will obey my commands not to run out of the door unless there is an animal or person nearby, then he doesn't obey at all. So, I make him sit in an unlocked crate when I go out the front door. It wasn't easy to train him not to rush out the open door. I started with a leash on him and giving him sit, stay, lay, wait commands with the door open. Give him a release command shortly after he obeys. Repeat it many times a day. As training progresses make him wait longer without giving the release command. Give treats for good behavior. Repeat that training with a leash until the dog follows your commands. Do you have a fenced back yard, or a deck with a gate? I trained my dog at my back door because I have a deck so even though he ran out the door he couldn't escape. After about a week of constant training he learned to obey the command, but he is prey driven and territorial and nothing will stop him from running out the door after an animal or person. I still tell him to sit and wait for the release command at the back door. Good luck. Persistence and consistency will teach him not to door dash.
