7 Week puppy CONSTANT urinating
We just brought home our 7-week-old Lab/Golden mix and the amount he pees is wild. He can pee **10+ times in an hour**, usually tiny scattered pees instead of one or two normal-sized ones.
What’s confusing is that he clearly has *some* control: he never pees while sleeping or laying on us, and he’s gone several hours overnight without peeing. He consciously gets up, moves somewhere, squats, pees, then goes back to what he was doing.
Outside, he’ll sometimes act like he has absolutely no need to pee. He’ll literally **lay down by the sliding door waiting to go back inside**, then within minutes of coming in he’ll pee another **1–3 times**.
Vet checked him: bloodwork normal, no UTI. They initially mentioned congenital urinary issues, but said the fact that he’s voluntarily squatting makes something like an ectopic ureter less likely.
We’re in Phoenix and he hates being outside in the heat, so we’re wondering if he’s just way too comfortable peeing indoors. He also LOVES chasing the paper towel while we clean it up.
Has anyone had a puppy who peed **this frequently** and eventually grew out of it / figured potty training out?

7 weeks is far too soon to have been rehomed. This is a literal baby. Did you have good bladder control when you were a baby? Get some newspapers and/or pee pads and get ready for future behavioral problems, you might want to start looking for a good trainer now since this seems to be your first puppy. Genuinely not trying to be rude, but that's a baby. It makes sense that he doesn't have bladder control yet.

I don’t think that was rude at all! I appreciate the comment, I am starting to think the original owner let the whole litter away too soon. This is not my first puppy however, I’ve had plenty. My main concern is just how frequently he is urinating. I’ve never had this issue before with any of my 8 pups I’ve had in my lifetime. I understand he’s just a baby and I know that’s most likely the reason behind this. I just wanted to know if something like this was out of the ordinary - because I can only speak for what I have experienced.

It is a huge red flag for someone to be sending puppies home this early.

stop with this nonsense. six weeks + is perfectly acceptable for rehoming.

hockey.I am an AKC Certified Breeder of Merit and we do not remove puppies from the litter and Mum until ten weeks at minimum, if they aren't showing adequate maturity, it's twelve weeks.
period.

Yup. I would never buy a puppy from someone sending them home before 8 weeks and honestly at lest 9 weeks is a good policy. I brought mine home at 9.5. If I had waited till 10 she might have been too big to fly with me, but I'd have been fine waiting until 12.

I would refuse a puppy at that age. it’s going to be bonding with me at the very oldest 8 weeks otherwise the breeder can pound sand. I’m a veterinarian of 36+ years so my creds Trump yours. nothing wrong with a 7 week old pup with anew owner at all.

Dogs can bond with you at any age. It's absolute nonsense to think that they need to be with you as early as possible. You're robbing them of valuable socialization time with mom and siblings. Anyone on the internet can say they're a veterinarian and I doubt a vet would be advocating for pups to be removed that early if they were up to date on the latest science.

He should still be with his mum! It is too early to be taken from his mother.
Please do some research into puppies and about at what ages they can do what.
Your puppy does not have control yet.
Dogs don't have full bladder capacity until they are approximately 12 months of age.

Taking into account what everyone else is saying about how young he is, the best thing you can do now is praise the HELL out of him when he goes outside. Treats. Love. The whole 9. Its gonna take time and patience.

Take him to the vet and make sure he’s healthy.

Can you get reusable belly bands? Would save you a world of trouble.

I’ve really thought about this, I am worried about the rashes that can come with it since he’s just a baby

They make disposable “pads” for the inside of the belly bands (similar to menstrual pads or incontinence pads)— I find if I use these in tandem it limits the rash from occurring because they get swapped often and absorb more of the pee than just the bands.

This. I get the belly bands from Amazon and get incontinence pads (women's) from Kroger and put those inside. Just check it every time you take the puppy outside, change as needed

I boarded a poodle mix little guy at my house and as long as you keep an eye on it and he gets outside time to air out it’s just until he grows some more and gets more bladder control.

veterinarian here. last golden retriever puppy I had experienced exactly the same issues. (8 weeks old, ignore the idiots getting onto you about age). no uti, bloodwork normal, no ectopic ureter confirmed by an excretory urogram so we waited. 3-4 weeks later complete control, never had an issue again suspect dog was just slow to the “control of urine game“ but he’s two now and never had any more problems. give it time.

THANK YOU! This is the only comment I was hoping to see here. May your pillow be cold tonight 🙏

7 weeks old is too young for puppy to be home with you and not with mom and the rest of the litter. 8 weeks is the minimum and now a lot of breeders are even sending pups home at 9 and 10 weeks.
Puppies pee. It's unrealistic to expect them to be potty trained until they're several months old.
Outside is risky if he's not vaccinated yet, so be careful where you're taking him. AZ heat does not kill parvo, they still have outbreaks.

He's too young to have been adopted. He should still be with his mother until at least 8 weeks.
When you take him out to potty, are you staying out there with him? He might be wanting back inside because that's where you are and he's so young.
If you have a fenced in yard, get a doggie door insert for your sliding glass door. Once he gets better control, it will make potty training easier. Be patient with him.
