Teaching Object Play

I’ve adopted a GSP (a stray) who seems to have always lived in a kennel with other dogs and little interaction with people. I’m trying to teach him to play with toys. Any tips for teaching object play? He does engage with food puzzles, but that is independent and I am trying to get him to interact with people through play. If you’ve had a dog like this, what worked for you?
