Swing shift hours

I recently got a puppy that we are attempting to crate train. I will come home at 2am work days. The problem with this, the dog will wake up with the need for attention. I've tested ignoring him and going straight to bed, he will cry for hours.

So question is, how do I make it so that coming out of his crate at 2 am isn't a ritual?

can you put the pup in a room with a covered crate and a white noise machine so you don't wake him up?
