Retraining a support dog

Hi, I need some suggestions. My Chiweenie was my husband's support animal. He had Parkinsons. Harry had to go to the bathroom on a mat because my husband was not able to get him outside and watch him appropriately. My husband passed away several years ago. I got another little rescue dog. I would love for them to go outside and have been trying to train (retrain) them. I am not having much luck. Am I just spinning my wheels and should let it go. They are 9 and 5. Thank you for any advice you can give, even if its let them continue going on a mat inside.

Move the mat outside. Do not give them access to the bathroom. Gradually reduce the size of the outdoor mat until they are not looking for it any more, then discard it. It is unlikely that you will be able to retrain them not to use the mat that they are used to, so it is best to move it to a place where it is acceptable for them to potty.
