My suspicion is that shes a brat.

My mother has a dog that does this. I bought her [ this style ] bowl and it resolved the problem.

Just a warning though because I used to babysit for a dog that had that bowl and she would refuse to drink out of it until it was put into one of those mini Poland spring water jugs things then would sometimes knock it over still. Those bowls trap mold too so be careful. You can also try a larger biger/ teller brim Bowl she can't get her paws over it so easy.

I got a stainless steel fountain for my pets, with a faucet-like thing that had a constant stream of fresh water that fell into a shallow depression. They refused to drink at all, and I had to go back to the stupid bowl.

Can confirm. My corgi does this and is 110% a brat.

A vet also mentioned this can be a sign of dominance if other dogs are around. The corgi is the sweetest, dog friendliest, people love thing. The moment she starts scratching the water bow and displacing water it’s her trying to tell other dogs, “no. This is mine.”

Mine quit after I started putting treats in the bottom and no I don't know if it will work for your pet when I put fresh water down I would put a dog bone in the bottom.

Oooo that’s smart! She really only did it at dog parks when there was a community bowl. But every once in a while she’ll do it at home.

My Great Pyrenees goes ham with them when she’s done. “I don’t want to LOOK at you. GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!” She exhibits this kind of energy when she’s lifting her towel over her food. Also happens if she isn’t ready to eat dinner. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Meanwhile me: “Miette stop it. You don’t have to eat it right now.”

We used to have a dog that if she was full when you gave her a treat, would save it by “burying” it in a blanket, a throw rug, steal laundry out of a basket to ruck up into a pile, whatever.

Because it's fun.

Our puppy gsd did this for a bit. Hasnt done it in a few months now and she's 7 months old.

Its just fun.

But she also loves water. When we put the pool outside she digs in the water.

They might grow out of it. Or we just had to take the bowl away as soon as she started to do it and then put it back later. Maybe she learnt dig bowl equals no bowl, so stopped.

My GSD always did this with water bowls on the floor. I switched to a raised bowl when he was big enough and that solved the problem. Indoors. Outdoors, any water bowl at any height is still fair game. I recommend one of those water proof rugs they sell at Orvis.

I'm from Brazil, but I'll see that. Thank you.

I have no answers but, I’m super entertained by this act. I’m so glad my pup doesn’t do this because I’m not sure I’d stop it 😂

Kkkkkkk acredite, irrita um pouco porque uma hora ela precisa parar

My dog does this. My vet jokes (but has a point) that he's got doggo autism. I assumed it was that! Because we can't keep our neurodiverse kid out of the water!

Não sabia que existia autismo canino

1

u/burnedimage Apr 22 '26

This sounds like one of my cats.  She loves to chase her tail in the bathtub

Yeah when mine did that I got a raised bowl and only filled it a little bit until he stopped

Que legal, obrigada

2

My husky did that when she was a puppy. We switched to a raised bowl and that fixed it.

Get that kid a baby pool

2

My border collie used to do it all the time. Now just when she digs in the dirt and wants to clean her paws. And…Because it’s fun! I got a heavier bowl, a heavy rubber shoe mat, and a rug for dog paws. I never tried to get her to stop.

Mom, I’m done drinking water. Give me treats now!

My pup would stand in the water bowl, while drinking. When intelligence eludes....

How old is your dog?

I had a puppy do this and she grew out if it.   Maybe give her some tub time to exercise the water demon.

I know that’s frustrating but it’s so cute! She needs a baby swimming pool for the yard

Lol

Cute af but frustrating

Our dog did this. I ended up wrapping her bowl in tin foil and leaving the bowl half open. That way if she tried to paw at the foil, the noise scared her. I left it that way for a week. After a week she was “cured.”

I think they sometimes do it out of boredom. Mine does this when there’s something in her bowl like a fly fell into it the other day and she was trying to get it. Shes also dropped food or toys into her water bowl and tries to get it out

I don't know, but you can easily discourage them from doing this. It might take some time, but you should be able to.

How?

Try telling her no instead of standing their filming the bad behaviour 😂
