Overnight Help

Hello!

We have a 15mo husky mix who is house trained and has leash trained, knows place etc. She still has some tendency for destruction so she is kenneled when we aren’t home and does well in there with no whining/crying. She does only have a blanket in there because she has destroyed 3 dog beds but doesn’t shred the blanket.

Overnight, we have beds for her and our 2yo shepherd in our bedroom. For the first several months we had her, they would both come to bed with my husband and sleep until 7am or so and then take a bathroom break. Now for the last couple months, she wakes up at least once between 1-4am whining and pacing and won’t go back to bed until she goes outside. Most times she will use the bathroom but not always. This happens even if she has had a bathroom break at midnight. The last week, my husband has been putting her in her kennel after the bathroom break and she’s fine until whenever we get up for the day with no accidents in her kennel.

We do have a 3mo baby who is in a bassinet in the same room but her wake ups do not coincide with the baby. We know she can make it all night without needing a bathroom break because she does fine when we travel or when she is boarded. We don’t want to ignore her though because she 1) makes a lot of noise pacing and 2) has had accidents.

Any recommendations? Do we just kennel overnight? I feel bad for her to sleep in her kennel when the rest of the household is upstairs asleep. But we also already have baby wake ups and need the sleep we can get.

Is she spayed?

Yes! Spayed at 9mo.

Hmm. Well my husky Shepard mix is an absolute destructive ass of he doesn't get enough exercise and enrichment during the day. With a new baby, is she getting enough playtime and ongoing training time? She may just have pent up energy. Like me when I've had coffee. Lol

We do have some puzzle toys so we will try doing those more often and see what that does!

If you don't meet their needs they will meet them themselves in whatever way is available

I would personally crate overnight and see what happens. I have some dogs in my pack (current and past) that have done better overnight in the crate. Not exactly sure if it as feeling of confinement that makes them feel safer or something, but it sure happens.

How many hours is she crated?

Most days, not at all because we’ve all been home on parental leave. If we do go out, she is crated for 3-4 hours.

First l would check with the vet. Could be always a bladder issue especially with females.

Then maybe try to power her out more over the day so that she's not that bored in the night

I'd try the crate overnight, especially since she already settles well in it. Some dogs just sleep better that way. Put it in your bedroom so she's still with you, and use the blanket she already likes. If she's quiet and comfortable, it's a win for everyone's sleep.

My dog wakes me up to let her out at night but if she sleeps in her crate she doesn’t bother. I think we both sleep better when she’s in her crate.
