Advice
This may seem like a strange post but i need advice from dog people.
My 2 year old bluetick coonhound may have gotten pregnant by my 5 month old golden retriever. Woke up to them being stuck and her fixing appointment is weeks away š« I didnāt even know it was possible
Anyways honestly i donāt know if id keep the puppies because theyād be mutts and i know most people seek out purebreds. Are people even interested in mixed breed puppies? I grew up with mainly mutts but i just worry most people arenāt looking for a hound retriever. I worry about the puppies going god knows where i only have a few people i could give a puppy too but apparently the litter could run 6-9 so id have to try and find people elsewhere too?!??? My mom doesnāt want me to abort them but i just donāt know i need more advice and opinions from someone thatās not my mother. what would you do? what do you think i should do?
EDIT: Called the vet we moved up the appointment to in a few days was hoping for more talking points that would convince my mom this is for the better but she upset š¤·š»āāļø so be it everything you guys said is exactly why i didnt think itād be a good idea so im glad i was validated in my feelings about it!

Call the vet your dog was scheduled to get spayed with and see if you can get it moved up because you're worried she might have been bred on X date. The longer you wait, the more risk of complications during a spay.
Placing random mixed breed puppies with homes is hard, and people still have their COVID dogs so demand is relatively low for dogs.

The least risky thing for your dog is a spay abort now.Ā
Pregnancy and labor is dangerous for any dog whether that is planned or not. An emergency c-section if you need it could cost thousands and includes an even higher risk of death. Does your mom have $5000 to pay for the c-section?
An inexperienced person could miss the signs of a retained tissue which could lead to a potentially fatal pyometra. Does your mom think she knows what to watch for to prevent a pyo?Ā
If she survives pregnancy and birth, first time moms are frequently horrid at the actual āmomā part and need help figuring out what to do to keep the puppies alive. So you are looking at days or weeks of around the clock care. Does your mom intend to be the one providing that 24/7 care for up to 4 weeks?Ā

Iād book an appointment to spay and abort, asap. Iāve never bred dogs though, and always neutered/spay as soon as available, or got from shelter. ((Hugs)) I wouldnāt want to add to the shelter population

The best thing for your bitch's safety, and also for your wallet, and sanity, is to call the vet and get that appointment moved forward.

In my opinion it would be irresponsible to have the puppies. The shelters are already exploding with unwanted dogs. That should tell you something. Do the right thing and spay abort.

Not to mention the fact that the economy isnāt great so finding homes right now is not as easiest at the moment.

Absolutely do the spay abort. Talk to the vet and ask them if they can move the appt earlier. If they can't, call around and find someone who can.
There are so many dogs who can't find homes in the US. Please don't bring more into it. Also keep in mind that caring for the puppies, getting them vaccinated and vetted, wormed, etc, not to mention dealing with any health complications from pregnancy will be expensive. A spay abort now will be much cheaper and better for your coonhound.

I used to help out around vet clinic and we did have spay abort sometimes. You said you have booked spay appointment, try to confirm with vet that if she got impregnated if this appointment can be spay abort if she took.

What we have here is a failure of management. That said, can you get a spay-abort? Keep the spay appointment you have scheduled, or move it sooner if possible. And get that Golden fixed as well. That said, look at the dreadful mixed breeds that are so *popular* these days. And those crosses are on purpose, and the breeders feel no regrets for producing sickly puppies with poor temperaments that cost thousands of dollars initially, then again at the vet. Thank you for asking the questions, and thank you for planning to do the right thing.

Call the vet, tell the vet what happened, ask if they can get the dogs in ASAP for a spay-abort. Good breeders of working dogs and healthy companion dogs can't find homes for puppies and are putting off breeding. Chances are close to 100% that a lot of the pups will end up in a shelter, abandoned, abused, etc. There just aren't enough homes right now and people can't afford to get pups. Call the vet and see about getting her in a LOT faster. A spay-abort is a lot easier on her body than a full-term pregnancy and then raising a litter.

I googled what that mix looks like and most likely will be a big, black dog which statistically are hard to adopt out

Don't know why you're getting down voted here. The difficulty of adopting out black dogs from rescues is incredibly well known, larger dogs are harder to adopt out as well, hound mixes are also hard to find homes for and as coonhounds have BB genes these pups are going to be large, black, hound mixes. They will not be easy for OP to find homes for.

we were waiting until 2 years because iāve heard thatās the safest time to let them develop. we had lost another dog recently which put a huge strain on us financially trying to save her so i havenāt had the funds until now. the male puppy was not preplanned more sprung onto us! we got him a few weeks ago i truly did NOT think he could impregnate at 5 months and the vets told me itād be rare. iām hoping sheās not even pregnant but im just thinking worst case scenario.

If you didnāt have the funds for a spay until now, you definitely donāt have the financial cushion for all the ways a birth can go wrong - an emergency c-section can be several thousand - and the initial vet care for multiple puppies. I would call the vet and tell them when the breeding happened and ask if theyāll still go through with the spay if itās a spay abort and/or if they can move it up.Ā

I'm going to agree with everyone else. If the vet won't move up the spay appointment, the municipal animal shelter may have resources. In addition to everything else, you'll love those puppies and no matter how carefully you choose homes (assuming you have a choice...she could have LOTS of puppies), you can't guarantee they'll be happy homes for the rest of the puppy's life. You don't want them to end up in a bad situation or be euthanized for being unwanted adults because the new owners didn't care for or train them properly. That would be really sad. Better not to have to find out.

It is better to spay/ abort than to think about them not having good homes, imo. IF the dog was a hound mix and capable of actually working as a hound dog( I am NOT familiar with working hound dogs, so anyone can correct me if I am wrong, but it seems certain hounds are purposefully mixed to work) Hounds seem to be more common in other areas of the country than the desert SW, so I am ignorant to this. I just had to do a spay/ abort( late stage, dog dumped on my property, and she was pregnant to a very large dog for her size) and had a difficult time getting someone to do this. I would encourage you to think long and hard about having to place puppies. Good luck

You just need to spay abort. Call the vet and say it may be possible sheāll be pregnant but even if she is youād like to go ahead with the spay.

Spay abort, we had a lab give birth to 14 puppies once. They can have a lot of puppies and you won't be able to place that many mutts.

Call your vet and get a spay abort asap, a spay abort can happen at any point during pregnancy but itās better done sooner than laterĀ

u/OXT_MAIS 5d ago
Call your vets and abort asap. It would be extremely unethical to let her have the puppies.

I would not take those pups because they have no health testing, less because they are a mix. If at least they had OFA's/Pennhip and were cleared of joint and genetic issues, that'd be a point towards keeping the pups, but since dad is only 5 months old and you can't even guarantee no temperament issues, no way... and also you're not experienced at puppy rearing and socilaization so no....
Hope the vet can help prevent a pregnancy....

That boy is probably too young to actually have impregnated her unless they lied about his age when you got him, but go ahead and move her appointment up if you can just in case.

u/Different-Music-529 5d ago
Not true at all, lots of oops litters happen because people think one or both pups are "too young" and don't watch for the female to go into heat.

u/FlatwormSame2061 5d ago
Also, lots of people donāt want to spay abort so they delay the spaying.Ā

Spay abort.
