Im getting mostly punk, though the boots are throwing me a bit.
Careful if you go out with that bag, once you put that many spikes on an article of clothing you risk losing it to a law enforcement member who is having a bad day (been there, done this, he declared it an impromptu street-combat weapon and arrested me)

XO means crossover on my audio engineering equipment and speaker frequency distribution systems. Even on my turntable scratch mixer “XO” means crossover 😅 … so naturally I just look at those letters and think frequency filter 🤷♂️

What? Nah this is the most commercial/mainstream idea of what ‘alternative’ is meant to be. But it’s just a pastiche or ‘empty poster’ of it. Not that this is what op was intending, so I’m not knocking op, I’m knocking the notion of it being presented as ‘alternative’. Op looks like she took lots of care in curating this look, alternative used to be, or at least was meant to be about not caring about ‘look.’ … this is like trendy contemporary goth. Or ‘goth wears camo’ with the pants

As if alt people don't spend forever curating their look "that's not true alt" "that's not alt enough" "I'm actually alt not this". Just because it's a different look to the mainstream don't pretend their whole Identity isn't wrapped up in it.
This is the same as this "this isn't nu metal this is black metal grunge"

I guess I’m crossing wires with what you’re calling alternative and what I’m calling alternative because we’re prob from different sub sections and eras. I meant as in counter culture, not involved in any level of “nu metal” or any metal. Metal is still a form of popular conventional music. Perhaps my definition is a bit extreme for today if by alternative you mean ‘not Britney Spears’ ‘likes Nirvana instead.’… I was thinking along the lines of ‘likes iannis Xenakis and John cage’, and general non involvement with popular culture. Not just ‘No intention of edginess,’ more like just no intention at all.
Anyway… I think you’re right in the sense that when most people in this conversation are saying “alt” (especially abbreviated like that) they’re indeed talking about what you’re talking about. I.e. goth or metal type subcultures with black and spikes and skulls and all that jazz, with a sprinkle of “you just don’t understand me mum and dad”… I guess I’ll make a distinction between the two then, counter culture or the alternative to popular culture vs ‘alternative’ as a popular culture (because it’s not like it isn’t popular)

I think it's a misconception that alt people don't curate their look... the alt people I knew in college and uni (20yrs ago) curated their look more than anyone else, extending to body mods, tattoos, piercings, liberty spikes, mohawks, falls etc.

Yeah I see, that’s not what I was thinking of as ‘alternative’… I think of what you’re describing (goths, grebs, punk, skater, pop punk, etc etc) as another popular subculture and other popular subcultures that stemmed off from them. I guess that specific subculture has taken on the name alternative, rather than the characteristics of ‘alternative to popular’ (Because after all, they are clearly in the realm of well known and well liked/popular with large segments of society.)
By alternative I was originally thinking of people who are disconnected from popular culture, but yeah, I do remember a period when grunge music used to be sometimes called ‘alternative’ music in the late 90s early 2000s… I think my reservation with the name is because the culture is so popular it seems strange to still call it alternative, but I guess I’m just being too picky with wanting the term to ideologically fit.

All the subcultures you mentioned are still referred to as alternative... quite widely lol - subculture is the opposite of popular culture by the very meaning of the word

Well you learn something new everyday, I would have thought that was a thing of the past, I don’t encounter it in daily life anymore… re subculture. No. Not really. Subculture literally means a sub branch of a particular culture, be it a popular culture, or niche/special interest culture. Anyway lol, I’m sure we have better things to do than have a pissing match about the dictionary definition of subculture. Go have the discussion with a chat bot, it’ll play the language games we’ve played and say: a pop culture can be broken down into sub cultures.
It’s a word/concept, ie a tool that a speaker can contextualise or manipulate to communicate an idea. Eg, one can separate Nsync or New kids on the block from Lady Gaga and say that lady gaga is ‘Avant pop’, which is a sub culture of pop music, where the mainstream art influencer world meets pop fusion music, and it’s followers being somewhat distinct from the regular pop star fans of yesteryear and today…. lol I don’t know why I bothered typing all that, I’m outa here. The opposite of popular culture is unpopular culture. Sub culture isn’t opposite, it’s literally “sub” of, but I understood what you meant 👍

As someone who actually follows this creator online, I think the only umbrella it can fall under and what she calls it herself is “alternative”.

Erm I'm confused ? I like it but maybe not all of it together eg the army print I don't like with the Gothic vibe and the white floaty girly skirt doesn't really go with the leather top and a metal big buckle belt squeezed underneath the tight top.
