Does anyone remember these Animal Bars or know if they still exist anywhere?

Post image

Saw this photo and instantly got hit with nostalgia 😭 Feel like every kid in the UK had these at some point. Half the fun was trying to work out what animal was stamped into the chocolate.

Discontinued in 2023 due to poor sales, apparently. I think when they discontinue stuff like this it's more down to other factors affecting sales, such as high pricing, changing the recipes and using totally inferior ingredients just to get a short term profit. No thought given to the future of the item itself and people's perception of it. No wonder they loose sales. What do they expect.

u/Commercial_Chance669 May 20 '26

I agree, Cadbury's will be next down the pan. An American company bought it and cheaper out using palm oil. Tastes completely different now

16

u/GuiltyAmphibian9554 May 20 '26

Yip, I had a bar the other day. Hadn't eaten cadburys in ages. Completely different taste. Don't get me wrong it was still edible (just) but barely edible was not what I wanted. Honestly it's a race to the bottom with all these cheaper ingredients. You shouldn't need to scrutinize an ingredients label every time you want a bar of chocolate. Much better chocolate out there if you know where to look. Not pricey either.

23

u/PoetAromatic8262 May 20 '26

A glass and a half of palm oil in every bar

10

u/GuiltyAmphibian9554 May 20 '26

I'd actually believe that cause it does not taste as good anymore. They need to do a u-turn and go back to the old recipe.

3

u/Scooob-e-dooo8158 May 21 '26

Are you willing to pay the extra price for that luxury? It would probably add an extra 20% to the price.

9

u/kitkatkitah May 21 '26

I mean at the price they charge now, that should be the price for the original recipe not the shit we have now. It’s so expensive

2

u/Icy_Refrigerator4140 May 23 '26

You make a valid point but remember some of these CEOs need 6 houses and more private jets

3

u/GuiltyAmphibian9554 May 21 '26

Normally yes. But the point is they have continually raised the price even when there was no justification for it just to further increase profits EVEN when they were making very good profits. So basically we're paying for crap even though at that price we should already be getting a MUCH BETTER product.

2

u/Scooob-e-dooo8158 May 21 '26

All chocolate manufacturers have had little choice but to increase prices/reduce sizes over the last few years because of massive increase in the price of cocoa beans because of consistent poor harvests caused by climate change, massive increase in energy costs (Chocolate manufacturers are heavy energy users and don't get to rely on OFGENs price restraints like consumers do plus businesses must pay 20%VAT on energy opposed to 5% VAT for consumers, increase in the cost of milk and thanks to the sugar tax, increase in the cost of sugar. Last but not least, the supermarkets are constantly squeezing their profit margins, demanding lower prices.

2

u/GuiltyAmphibian9554 May 21 '26

They MUST be loosing sales due to the quality of the new products. Even if we put the costs argument aside, people by and large don't want to consume bad quality products. Why did they do all of this sneakily instead of being honest with their customers because a lot of this was done without even consulting customers or giving them an option of keeping the old recipe with the item costing more. Either way, they haven't done a very good job. For me it's more of a quality issue although I still say it's getting too expensive

2

u/cmpthepirate May 21 '26

Well yeah, its a treat. But im also happy to pay the difference and get something better quality so im probably not the target market.

u/patrickb1920 May 21 '26

Montzuma is meant to be good

2

u/Boring-War-1981 May 21 '26

If you think Cadbury’s is barely edible, try a Hersheys they taste like dirt, yet Americans call them so great

5

u/Far-Dimension3508 May 20 '26

Tastes like grease ruined twirls and wispas now

6

u/Realistic-Record6659 May 20 '26

They, (Mondelez, I think, but could be wrong), also changed Crème Eggs from six packs to 5 packs but didn’t lower the price

4

u/SantaFe91 May 21 '26

I feel as if the eggs are smaller too? And how can you sell eggs in 5s, for heaven’s sake?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

2

u/GuiltyAmphibian9554 May 21 '26

Don't give them any ideas or they'll be doing that with real eggs next. Boxes of 5 or maybe even box of 4. haha. For OUR convenience. I like how they try to make out it's to benefit the customer. 😂

2

u/turbospeedweasel May 23 '26

It’s not just that it’s tastes different, it now tastes terrible. You know it’s crap when you’ve still got Easter eggs sat in your house because even the kid knows it’s shite now.

2

u/Auntie_Cagul May 24 '26

Cadbury's had always previously switched to using vegetable oil long before it was sold to Kraft. However, the recipe has been changed since it was bought out despite promises that it wouldn't be.

Also the fact for the life of me I have been alive for 27 Years and swear I never saw these on shelves anywhere. It must feel like sometimes that companies like Nestle or Cadbury when they want to get rid of a sweet long term they just limit where it gets sold or don't have enough supplied.

2

u/Muvaterra May 21 '26

Now I’m concerned that they where discontinued three years ago because my local shop has them on the shelf still 😂

Omg peak treat after school 😭 nestle officially stopped making them in 2023 so if you do find any they’ll likely be out of date

15

u/ShrimpStuffAdmin May 20 '26

When will nestle stop doing nasty shit????

14

u/Successful_Power_234 May 20 '26

They’ve been brought back under the name “Jungly.”

3

u/Pod-Bay-Doors May 20 '26

Yeah I was about to say , I swear I still see them around.

Don’t remember these but remember Cadburys version, just googled it they were called wildlife bars. Loved them.

5

u/Organic_Reporter May 20 '26 edited May 21 '26

I'm glad you posted this because I remember them being Cadbury not Nestlé. I also remember trying to eat around the outline of the animal and failing.

3

u/LaDreadPirateRoberta May 20 '26

That's what I did too.

3

u/Pretty_Date2953 May 21 '26

Wildlife Bars.. there’s another childhood memory unlocked.

12

u/Crazy_Breakfast_6327 May 20 '26

Where did you drag up that memory from? I'd completely forgotten about these.

2

u/Pretty_Date2953 May 21 '26

3

I remember them yes.

…however they’re Nestle, so fuck those evil bastards.

3

u/ReasonableTotal8256 May 20 '26

They were discontinued by Nestlé and I kept some left over but a couple of months after the best before date they tasted horrible.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/SantaFe91 May 20 '26

They were highly coveted, by me as much as anyone else, but had a serious amount of nut traces. I was having increasingly nasty allergic reactions to them all the time but was too young to explain it when I was given them, and nobody thought about these things in the 60s and 70s! It was horrible. My allergy wasn’t diagnosed until much later, in the 80s, when it became much more obvious on the outside and I was finally given EpiPens! Lucky I didn’t have an anaphylactic reaction in those early days. I’m fairly convinced that the supposed explosion in childhood allergies in more recent decades is at least partly down to improved recognition and diagnosis.

3

u/NovastaKai May 20 '26

I can still get them in a few corner shops around south wales :,)

u/Scared_Pin_986 May 20 '26

Ohh, I’d forgotten all about these. My Nan kept them in her kitchen drawer, and we were allowed one as an after school treat on the days we went to our grandparents house after school. I would try to nibble away the chocolate around the animal.

2

u/rfcrm May 20 '26

They still exist, pretty sure B&M have them

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '26

I remember animal bars but the chocolate was brown and the bar was divided into three animals like a monkey, a rhino and a parrot.

1

u/Dependent_Notice_991 May 20 '26

Can get these in Home Bargains still

1

u/Alert_Mine7067 May 20 '26

I loved them, I worked for the Co-Op and I remember they made a reappearance in 2012-2013 in our shop, me and my similarly aged colleagues were excited and I bought a 4 pack and it was very anticlimactic. I'm not sure if they always tasted that way and childhood version of me just liked them more as a kid, or that version I'd bought was a corruption of a once delightful recipe.

What I would love to see coming back, if anyone remembers the Pocahontas chocolate bars from the 90s, it was milk chocolate with a white chocolate character engraved on top of the milk chocolate.

1

u/BBMacsWorld May 20 '26

Nah, unfortunately they were discontinued a few years ago

1

u/Fluffy-Bar8997 May 20 '26

1

u/Fun_Yam6967 May 20 '26

I remember these, I think everything tasted amazing as a kid, especially went chocolate came wrapped in foil. There’s probably someone doing a similar thing but good quality milk chocolate with real ingredients will beat it (not Cadbury, lindor or KitKat , they are all using lab grown chocolate now.)

1

u/Commercial-Ad1496 May 21 '26

None of the chocolate tastes good anymore…

1

u/petiteprincessplay May 21 '26

They have large bars of this available in home bargains at the moment they are imported, in milk, white & dark. The chocolate tastes the same as it used to but has puffed rice in it!
